Question Does the sexuality of a wrestler matter to you?

Does it matter to you if a wrestler is gay?

Imagine if Daniel Bryan is gay. Or CM Punk. Or Y2J. Would it matter to you if they were? The scenario of a successful professional wrestler coming out as gay is not unrealistic. With ever increasing acceptance in society, I think its plausible to state that more people are feeling comfortable with coming out as gay or bisexual. WWE is not immune to its societal surroundings; increasing societal acceptance seems to have influenced the WWE into its recent partnership with GLAAD and Be A Star Campaign (which I wouldn't be surprised if it also covers homophobic bullying). So, this ever increasing acceptance might influence a present WWE superstar to come out. Would it affect you as being a fan of them?

Discuss. :talk

I'll begin...

I have absolutely no problem if a wrestler is gay. It does not affect them who they are as a wrestler - it does not make them more or less talented. So, why should it affect me being a fan of them? I see no conceivable reason why it should.

Please refrain from insulting others because of their opinions, even if they do seem moronic, and please refrain from using homophobic slurs.

No and in the 21st century it shouldn't bother anybody.

Of course not.

(It should go without saying that the usual standards do apply: The wrestler has to be technically competent, not a dick, and preferably not high as a kite.)

edited to add: I would not want 'gay wrestler' to become that performer's gimmick, though.

As a fan it doesn't bother me at all. I'll still crack jokes though. But I joke about everything.

Kanyon was one of my all-time favorites. Dude was awesome.

Wrestling fans have a bit of history with "homophobia." If you take a look at how easily heat can get onto someone like Adrian Adonis or Goldust.

There's a difference between gay as in sexual identity and camp as in mannerism or gimmick in a character, though.

(I have noticed that the guys in the audience most likely to say "Ew. That's gay." or "Is he gay?" or "This is gross." or whatever are the guys with the biggest issues with their own masculinity. Not orientation, but their gender presentation and whether they're 'doing manliness right'. Your mileage may vary.)

Re: Does the sexuality of a wrestler matter to you?

In theory, it would be nice to say no but let's be honest. Without the massive homosexual undertones which came from the Goldust character, it would have been nowhere near as good as it was. So yes, the sexuality of a wrestler does matter whether it be the real life sexuality or the on-screen persona. It can be a positive or it can be a negative.

Goldust was supposed to be some sort of homosexual perv I recall, kissing Ahmed and so forth. Adonis was a gay gimmick i think...? I forget about him quite often.

Re: Does the sexuality of a wrestler matter to you?

The sexuality of anyone in society shouldn't matter, so I'd have no problem if any wrestler came out as gay. If it did happen, hopefully fans and fellow wrestler would be supportive.
