After Edge lost in his feud with Cena in 2006, Edge and Lita just drifted apart with little explanation.

Later that year, Edge and Orton formed Rated-RKO. They were an awesome mega-heel tag team but only lasted for a few months. While at that time, Lita won his very last Women's Championship.

Was this an example of WWE dropping storylines/gimmicks with little explanation (i.e. Punk leaving Nexus)?

Lita retired, There isn't much more to it than that..

Edge formed Rated RKO with Orton before Lita retired. He, Orton and Lita were briefly a stable from about August of that year until she left in November. Lita and Edge never broke up on screen she just retired.
