Default The Rock's talent should speak for itself…….

Hi all,

I am relatively new around here and so decided to read through some of the longform threads like the GOAT thread and a few others to familiarize myself with some of the posters here and to get a handle on the lay of the land.

One of the things that struck me and has me curious is the following - Why is it that certain fans on this board feel like they have to lose any sense of objectivity when it comes to their favourite wrestler?

I mean, I am a big Rock fan and find him to be extremely charismatic and entertaining, but I have no problem acknowledging certain things that aren't necessarily 100% to his credit.

For instance-

He is in incredible shape, but I don't mind saying that for a 40 year old man to be on the busy schedule that he is on and still be in better shape than he was as an athlete in his 20s and 30s, it makes it probable that he is on some form of performance enhancer. (Not suggesting anything illegal, he could be on medically prescribed Test or HGH etc.) He wouldn't be the first wrestler or actor to be on them and he won't be the last.

I think it is extremely impressive that Rock is probably the biggest overall mainstream star to ever come from the wrestling industry due to his unprecedented Hollywood success, but I don't mind saying that Steve Austin was probably more crucial to the success of the WWF during the Attitude Era, and it doesn't affect my enjoyment to acknowledge that most respected sources say that Austin was the bigger draw in wrestling at his peak.

I think Rock is one of the best promo men in history and maybe the funniest ever, but I can accept that several others were probably more believable/engaging when it came to the art of the serious promo.

I was delighted to see Rock back in the ring at Survivor Series 2012 and Mania 28, and thought that he did very well for someone who had been out of the ring for that length of time, but I'm not afraid to admit that neither was an all time classic in-ring performance.

Another good example of what I am talking about was Hollywood Rock. I found that run to be highly entertaining, but don't mind saying that the character wasn't great for building up serious matches and ended up being a disappointment at the box office. The fact that every PPV that Hollywood Rock appeared on dropped business from the year before and even probably the most remembered segment from that run, the first Rock Concert, did poorly in the ratings, doesn’t change the fact that they entertained me greatly.

I still prefer Rock's match with Goldberg at Backlash 2003 to HHH-Goldberg at Unforgiven 2003, even though the HHH match did a higher number of PPV buys. I can still enjoy the first Rock concert even though it wasn't a ratings bonanza. My enjoyment of Rock-Cena wasn't affected by the recent WWE Investors' Conference readjusting the Mania 28 PPV numbers to just below the 2007 Mania 23 show. I still thoroughly enjoy most of Rock's promos and matches even though Hogan and Austin may have been bigger in wrestling and more important to WWF's bottom line etc.

Speaking of that last point, I actually don't even know why a Rock fan would concern themselves over Hogan or Austin at their peak being bigger than Rock in wrestling, because it doesn't really matter anyway. Rock is fairly inarguably a bigger overall star than either of them due to his Hollywood stardom. (Not that that matters to me either.)

It just baffles me when some fans can't seem to bear anyone having another opinion or even acknowledge anything that might suggest their favourite wasn't the biggest thing ever in wrestling, and end up making hypocrites of themselves by contradicting things they have already said etc. I'm sure I'll probably have a few of them attack me now for suggesting some of the things I have said above, even though I am a huge Rock fan.

To me, the Rock's talents should speak for themselves, and any Rock fan should be able to enjoy them without having to constantly overstate things. What does it matter if Austin was a bigger draw, so long as Rock entertained you? Fans who have to constantly shout about GOAT this and GOAT that without acknowledging a little reality, just make themselves look bad and actually hurt their own credibility for the occasions when they have actual valid points to make.

For the record, the above goes for fans of any wrestler, I just gave Rock-based examples because I count myself as a major Rock fan.

Sorry for rambling on, I just think if we all showed a little objectivity, as I did above with Rock, this could be a much more positive place, and we could increase the number of constructive discussions that already take place here and decrease the amount of stubborn posts that clog up good threads where neither side acknowledges anything the other says.

People only care about things they can attribute to their favorites. People are biased, its that simple. Some are more biased than others. You also have to understand that most times the stupidest shit people say are just trolling.

Everyone holds some sort of unpopular opinion though.

It's hard to ascertain what you're talking about, but if the gist of it is this

You've probably been browsing the GOAT thread too much.

not long ago i was going to make a thread similar to this and it was basically

Rocky marks are the worst kind of marks on here.... and the reason being that of all the marks on this board the need to prove his greatness over all others seems to be on a whole other level from other marks ...repped tho op for truth
