Is it just me or do you guys ever wonder why pro wrestling is so looked down upon and hated by non wrestling fans. A lot of my close friends were fans during the attitude era and stopped watching because plenty of their favorite stars left or retired. I have always been a wrestling fan for the longest time and i always get asked "why do you watch it? its so fake!", "why are you watching 2 men in baby oil roll around the ring". I usually say well movies are fake why do you watch them? then they usually reply saying "thats totally different" and never give me a reason why. Do you guys also wonder why its so hated by non wrestling fans?

Your thread title was misleading. You mean the hate for pro wrestling. The way you worded the title made me think hate backstage or something. Anyway, it's considered low-brow entertainment.

-Wrestling is hated by the masses because of the silly, phony bullshit they do in storylines. Plus when you have workers in the ring that look like they are "playing fake wrestling" instead of actually wrestling, it's a turn off.
-Former fans that stopped watching stopped because the current product sucks, and there are no bigger than life entertaining characters like before.

You're right, there is a bit of hypocrisy with fake fighting in a ring being a complete no-no while fake fighting in a movie is a-ok, and I think it's because of focus and technique. Namely, in a movie, the focus is on whatever the protagonist's story happens to be, not the thirty second punch-up that happens in a scene. And because wrestling is a lot more raw (pun fully intended) than filmed action. It happens right in front of people and they react and the audience is a part of the show, whereas in movies there's takes and second takes and camera angles to get everything looking its best, and it's not really associated with the audience at all in its end point.

Funny you should say that because the "bigger than life" stars are usually the fakest. When I was a kid my Uncle brought to my attention that Hulk Hogan constantly gets punched in the head and doesn't have a black eye or anything. To help me understand...he punched me in the head. That's just BASIC stuff.

When you enter the Attitude Era, you have guys like Kane that can throw fire but can't beat Stone Cold who is regular guy and can't throw fire...it makes no sense. Rock gets hit in the head with a hammer, his ambulance is run over by an 18-wheeler and not only is he alive, he shows up unharmed to the match AND wins! Ridiculous.

The "larger than life" thing is oddly enough the biggest attention grabber and also the one that leaves the business open to criticism. Umaga is 400lbs and Cena can beat him, not once but twice but Kevin Federline can pin Cena no problem. I'll never forget Jimmy Kimmel laughing at that and the first words out of his mouth "Welp, I guess we can safely say wrestling isn't real" the day after Federline pinned Cena. That type of stuff just warms the hearts of haters everywhere.

Wasn't Rock out for a bit before the match? Anyway, the only larger than life stars in the attitude era were Austin and Rock. Both were guys that you either wanted to be, or could get extremely interested in.

I always thought that people are against wrestling because they hold it in a regard of being something that kids mainly watch rather than older viewers. especially in the early 90's where cartoonish gimmicks were a cliché in wrestling. I never used to say that I was a wrestling fan or watched Power Rangers as a kid because it was seen as uncool and too cheesy for the "cool kids" to watch but now that I'm older, I have no problem saying I'm a wrestling fan no matter how many eye-rolls I get.

That or people just don't get "it".
