I find that one big problem on WWE's roster and in wrestling in general in the last years is a chronic shortage of legit tough guy looking wrestlers. The hairy, greasy, sweaty rugged looking types who always look 40. You know what i'm talking about, Arn Anderson looking mugs. Arn Anderson looked 40 the moment he popped out of his mom's hooch. Most of the today's guys look so...so...so GQ. So metro, so preppy. And no, i'm not talking about the muscle mass. Look at the heads below and then compare them to today's crop. I also find it incredibly funny when someone like Miz, Orton or Swagger grows a beard in an attempt to look more masculine

Most of those guys were older, though. Of the new guys, only Cena is anywhere near middle aged - and he's still a movie star looking fellow. The WWE stars just trend younger than the old boys of wrestling.
(If you look at pictures of Malenko, for example, from his early days and his days wrestling in Japan - he was a handsome fellow. Mainstream viewing audiences just didn't meet him until he was in his 30s.)
You just have to look at the state of popular culture over the years and what subcultures were popular. In the 80's rock was huge, and in the 90's grunge and rap really took off so of course all the wrestlers had a much more edgy appearance.
In 2012 it's all about dance/pop music and Jersey Shore/reality TV kinda shit. It isn't cool to be rugged and look like some dude you'd see in a greasy bar on the sketchy side of town.
