Shawn Michaels didn't actually need to stay away as long as he did. Heck, he had a match outside of the WWF in 2000. That being said I'm sure he needed time off so I just don't think an extended Michaels/Austin feud would have happened no matter what.

It may sound unpopular, but i'm not sure about that back injury, maybe i'm paranoid, but i suspect HBK found an excuse to not be there in a weekly basis, because he wouldn't like to be outshined by Austin and the rock. During the attitude era, it was all about mic skills and attitude, so i think austin and rock would've always surpassed HBK.

IMO, the HBK/Taker feud should have continued, as Taker never got his revenge. I think Austin would have continued to have the run he did, except that instead of feuding with Vince's guys, he would have probably feuded with HBK & DX.

HBK staying around would have certainly hampered the 3 members of DX that replaced him, as well as The Rock & Mick Foley's rise to the top as quickly. I can't help but to think whatever spot Rock had as a main event heel, would have been HBK's. Rock, instead, would have been the face later in the year, continuing his feud with a heel HHH.

always wondered about this, what happened if hbk never injured his back, and in the bigger picture what would if the screwjob was avoided and bret stayed and made up with shawn

anyways imo it would of been juicy

on one hand hbk was great, would of loved to see him in 1998-2000 continue to wrestle, always felt sad that he could not wrestle and imagined his fueds with rock/austin/etc
hbk's attitude fit at that time and he could have 5 star matches

BUT his attitude would of caused chaos, vince would never allow him to go to wcw with his buddies, especially since he fit nwo just like hall/nash and he was another big name for wcw

so vince would be forced to keep dealing with his attitude in 98, probably causing more problems like the one night only match where he was suppose to lose

BUT would vince risk losing on austin's push to appease shawn, or piss of shawn and risk him leaving

fasinating stuff to think about

always sad that bret/shawn, two favorites who started the whole AE were forced out in a matter of months and never wrestled 98-01

Not necessarily.

Austin was already lashing out against McMahon and attacking authority figures before the screwjob.

Regardless if Bret or HBK left or not, an Austin push was inevitable. Still leaves the door open for a feud between the 2, based on Austin rebelling against authority.

Actually, if both men stayed, the Hart Foundation/DX feud would have picked up, leaving Austin open as champion, to feud with either Rock, Foley or Undertaker.

But, I don't think Bret/HBK could have prevented Austin/McMahon, especially since the seeds had been planted while Bret was around and on the road to WM 14. Remember, Vince stripped Austin of the IC Title in 1997, so it was room from there for that feud to start.

A lengthy Shawn Michaels & DX vs 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin would've been great. I remember wondering if Austin & Mike Tyson would team up against Triple H & Shawn Michaels in a tag team match (which would've been good).

I think had Shawn stayed around he would have chased after the world title until the summer and possibly jumped ship to the WCW to join Hall and Nash in mid-1998.

Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels had potential to be THE feud of that whole era as whether people like it or not Shawn Michaels was loved by Vince McMahon and was always going to be pushed as one of the top three guys regardless of whoever else was around. I don't think The Rock would have been affected by Shawn Michaels being around as nothing was really going to stop The Rock once he properly got over in late 1997/early 1998 which was a time when Shawn Michaels was around anyway.

Shawn Michaels played a HUGE part in the beginning of The Attitude Era and in reality is probably the man who ushered in the era as D-Generation X being led and focused around him is the start of that era properly. I don't think Triple H would have been affected either as it was such a natural and apparent thing that we would see Shawn Michaels and Triple H feud at some point so Shawn Michaels would have simply turned babyface and Triple H as the top heel would still have happened.

If anything that whole era would have been better for having Shawn Michaels as there were times in 1998 where the whole show had to be revolved around Stone Cold Steve Austin due to there only being The Undertaker, Kane and Mick Foley as fellow main eventers whilst The Rock and Triple H were still mid carders. Stone Cold Steve Austin of anytime in 1998 to early 2001 against Shawn Michaels as a similar character he was in 1997 to 1998 would have been epic and drawn HUGE numbers because WWE in between mid 1997 and early 2001 were on fire and because of how both men were as characters they would have really shown what attitude was all about.

if bret/shawn stayed and put there egos aside and did what was best for the company and we had them in 1998-2000 it would of been well "off the charts great"

we still could of had austin/mcmahon
remember austin stunned vince when bret was still there in 97 during the IC storyline, the seeds were planted even before the screwjob, i hate it when fans say the screwjob started the whole vince thing

austin still could of had his run but with better rivals with bret/shawn
and hart foundation could of continued along with dx, they still could of added the new member and shawn/hhh as leaders

so in 98 instead of austin owning the entire year we could of had the following

-hart foundation/dx fued continue with a series of hbk/bret matches that started at surivor series 97, could of had atleast 3-4 big ppv matches from two legends
-tyson/austin vs hbk/hhh similiar to BATB rodman that same year possibly at summerslam
-bret/austin wm14 rematch from wm13, possible 5 star passing of the torch match

plus shawn/bret both could of continued fueding with taker and others

if they wanted austin as the clear main event they still could of had foundation/dx in the semimain event then austin/rock or austin/taker

AE could of been even better if these two stayed and settled there differences
