Piper at Wrestlemania 19...

Never really thought twice about it but why the hell did Piper turn up in Hogan vs McMahon at Wrestlemania 19?

At the time I was quite young, knew of Piper but didn't really understand/respect his work and had seen little (if any) of his matches.

So I was thinking about all the matches McMahon has had and it brought me back to this one where Piper comes out of nowhere, looks like he's gonna hit McMahon with a pipe and hits Hogan instead and then just leaves. For it not to be mentioned again or no mention of him in the build up to the match (if my memory serves me right). I was just a kid so I never questioned it but if something like that happened now, I'd be like 'oh it's cool to see that legend make a WM appearance but what the hell just happened?'.

Anyone?

Re: Piper at Wrestlemania 19...

As I recall, Piper, Hogan and Vince got involved in a long program that lasted several months after that. Also involving guys like Rikishi and Sean O'Haire.

Oh ya and that was also the year 'Mr. America' was born.

Re: Piper at Wrestlemania 19...

At the time I just assumed it was because back in the day many people felt Piper was Hogans perfect heel rival. It was just a blast from the past and a way to pay homage to the old standing feud...

Not gonna lie, I remember the crowd going crazy watching that and thinking

"Who the fuck is that?"

"Who the fuck is that?" in 2003? Maybe in today's crowds, but not at the tail end of wrestling's biggest boom period ever..

Re: Piper at Wrestlemania 19...

You didn't know who Piper was? I know, it's not my business, but I really wish wrestling "fans" would further educate themselves with the stuff that came before their time. I used to read those PWI almanacs when I was in grade school and just soak up all the information that they had. Very useful!

Re: Piper at Wrestlemania 19...

Didn't they do a shitty job of showing it on the actual PPV? I remember they showed him from the back for the longest time while he was in the black disguise and stayed there even after he had disrobed. Back then I wondered why the crowd was marking out because I couldn't see his face and then I noticed he was wearing a kilt.
