I have no real evidence to prove it apart from the pops I hear on TV, but I get the impression that the British fans appreciate Santino more than the American fans do.
Santino humo(u)r is almost exactly the type that is common on British TV. I can't describe it, but it's slightly different to American humor.
I was amazed the first time I noticed - when they had that tea segment with Sheamus. Sheamus was one of their own (well, Irish, not Great Britain but British Isles) but they were chanting "Santino, Santino". I'd like to think there was more to it than simply Sheamus being heel and Santino being face.
That tea segment was funny whether you are British or not. I'm scottish and I don't actively hate Santino, infact I was cheering him on during the EC this year, but I don't really think Brits like Santino any more than Americans, or anyone else, do.
And what's all this shit about his type of humor being common on British TV? I haven't seen that type of shit on many british tv shows and if I did I would immediately change the channel.
Seriously, this thread is actually embarrassing me as a Brit.
I can't speak on behalf of the entire of England, but we tend to hate cringeworthy, cheesy, intelligence-insulting bullshit, so I wouldn't be surprised if the people here hate Santino even more than people in America.
I'm Irish and I find him highly amusing. My friend at work doesn't. I don't think where you come from matters. The thing is - his gimmick is comedic and that's his part of the show. Ironic that he legit could probably knock the shit out of a lot of the roster.
If the WWE actually had a comedy character catered to us Brits, it'd be the funniest thing ever. Somebody with a Bernard Black gimmick, a misanthropic, moody drunk.

I think that the biggest thing to take away from this is that Santino is a love/hate character. I think that he is above average in all aspects and that he has his little niche. However, the EC performance showed that the crowd will get behind him in those big moments and I think that he is someone who has been under utilised as solely a comedy character.
Really enjoyed his heel run (and he was genuinely funny back then), but he's been VERY stale for a long time, really wished he would have reverted back to his MMA/Bad-ass gimmick from OVW.
He is as popular in England as he is in the United States. WWE comes to the UK a lot less obviously then then USA so when they do come over people are more excited and are more vocal as it may be the only time they get to see WWE live. Hence the big Santino reactions and even the huge John Cena 'you can't see me' line which in America doesn't even get a reaction anymore.
You can't use a clip from months ago to gauge how people feel about him now, plus as someone else pointed out, because WWE only comes over here maybe once a year, the fans seem to get over excited at certain segments (even the shitty unfunny ones).
Santino hasn't done anything entertaining for a long time. I just cringe whenever he's on now.
If we're going by stereotypes I would assume most of us hate santino.
