Wrestler Years 5: Undertaker

For the last thread I did Kane, so I think i'll do his brother Undertaker for this one. What's your favorite year for Undertaker?

P.S Like the other threads i've made some adjustments to the poll to better suit the thread as well as make the poll shorted.

My Favorite period for the Undertaker was 1998/99. I absolutely loved the Lord of Darkness, it was when I believed he was in his true element around that time as the Undertaker. He wasn't the old Undertaker who spoke little and was more zombie like, but he wasn't entirely humanized like his American Badass version. It was just right for him, and I kind've wish he reverted back to that persona when the Deadman returned, then his first persona.

Favorite Wrestlers Of All Time - The Undertaker, The Rock, Stone Cold, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle and Edge

Re: Wrestler Years 5: Undertaker

I was never into the Lord of Darkness character. Not saying it sucked, just for me personally, was never into it.

I thought the 2005-2009 (revised) years of "The Deadman" were when he flat-out perfected his character, his ring style, and more was when Taker was at his best. The man knew his place, knew what he could do, and surprised me on more than one occasion in the ring. It was like he took everything that worked in the past and put it all together and it just clicked.

That said I got a special place in my heart for Taker during 96/97. He was a mainstay by that point and was always in the wildest damn storylines. As a kid, you couldn't but help eat that shit up. I remember vividly when Bearer bashed him over the head with the Urn at SummerSlam 96. And then the whole story about not wanting to fight his brother and his battles with Mankind. Hell yeah. Those were good times.

Re: Wrestler Years 5: Undertaker

It's tough to pinpoint Taker's top years because he's been awesome for different reasons from 1997-2009. 1997-1999 he was a big top draw for the company. From 1998-1999 he was at his best character wise. From 1998-2003 he was excellent on the mic. From 2005-2009, he had an amazing 4 years of in-ring work that I don't think is touched by anyone else at the level of starpower that Undertaker has and especially 2007-2008 are the best two years of in-ring work that's not have anything to do with Benoit or Bret Hart.

If I had to choose one of the options in the poll, it would be Big Evil, 2002-2003. Awesome heel run during that time, had great matches with Angle, Rock, Flair, Lesnar, Cena, and more. He was at his peak on the mic and was legit one of the best mic workers in the company at that time. He was dominating, evil as a heel, and entertaining as fuck. People don't like the ABA/Big Evil chapter of Taker due to it... well... not being the real deadman. But I say if it was entertaining in all aspects, then fuck it, that's his best time for me, and his character was great as well, even if it wasn't the deadman. Only flaw he had at this point in time was he wasn't a major draw as ABA/Big Evil, and his Undisputed Title run, despite being the best in terms of entertainment, wasn't keeping business up with Rock leaving and Hogan out of the main event. But still, that's minor imo when determining his best year compared to years like 1998-2001 when he wasn't good in the ring or 2005-present where he's been just boring on the mic and not the most exciting thing to watch when he's not wrestling.

I'm watching you...

Lord of darkness. Nothing beats the hood, goatee and the intro with the candles. Scared the crap out of me as a kid. Plus he put on epic feuds and matches too

Re: Wrestler Years 5: Undertaker

I was a kid when he debuted and he was terrifying to me, loved his first heel run but he lost his mistyque when he turned face on Jake. Lord of Darkness had a lot of good moments......and viscera but his first few appearences for me

Re: Wrestler Years 5: Undertaker

Personally, my favorite is the first gimmick that Taker had. It's what made him. He had a kind of valor that just appealed to me the most. Calaway truly became a different entity entirely with this role and he acted it well even with very little words and when he did speak...he knew how to speak it. He has successfully evolved over the years and there isn't a gimmick of his that I don't like. I'd have to say that his Lord of Darkness years are my second favorite. I didn't grow up watching wrestling so I've had to rely on youtube and other miscellaneous footage on the internet.

What I particularly admire is that his character's evolution has a pretty solid storyline. Not just a wrestling character with a different personality than the actor, but an actual supernatural character who grew, developed, and changed. An Undertaker that died and came back for vengeance. Once that zombified man died, he became reborn into a new man who sought out new ways of thinking. Then he continued to change and acknowledged his human side and decided to just let things happen as they happen. Now he has embraced that darker side of him again and chooses to experiment with everything that he has learned. I may just be ignorant because I'm not too familiar with many classic wrestlers, but I can't think of a character as compelling as the Undertaker.

I liked the gimmick. That was actually around when I started watching WWE. I just didn't like his entrance music. I was never a fan of Kid Rock or Limp Bizkit.
