I'm pretty sure if that match ever did happen Austin would not do it unless he was closing Wrestlemania or on 2nd to last like he was in 2003 when he faced The Rock for the last time. I also don't see Austin winning the match against Punk if it is only going to be a one time deal.
2nd to last is still midcard, it's NOT good enough. Punk needs a MAIN EVENT. Fucking Miz has main evented WM and Punk hasn't. That's disgraceful, and that's coming from a Miz fan.
And of course Austin would win. He's not gonna put Punk over, Punk isn't a Superman character like Cena. I don't even think Vince would LET Punk beat Austin, even if Austin wanted to lose. I really don't believe it.

I understand wanting a match between them to be great, but saying it shouldn't happen because you think you know everything about how WWE would set it up is quite arrogant. I really don't think Austin is this weak mid card draw that you are so sure he is. He hasn't physically wrestled a match in almost 10 years. Austin's return to in ring action after a decade of retirement is a big ticket match and a hype train waiting to leave the station.
I didn't say he's a "weak mid card draw", he's not Sheamus or Randy Orton, obviously. When I say he's not a draw, I mean he's not a MEGA STAR anymore. And he's not. The Rock is. Even Cena is. Hell, at this point, even Lesnar, Triple H and Undertaker will draw more than Austin and it's not good enough, you can't main event a WrestleMania with the kind of business he'll bring in, it's not going to happen. I don't like it but I can acknowledge when somebody's run is over.
Would they make this match a main event if he was wrestling Cena? Yes, but not Punk. Not a chance in HELL.

Name me a better way Austin could have ended his career
You can't. He ended his career vs the best possible opponent and a very good friend. He almost died the night before, and he looked like shit the entire match but they still managed a **** match. Now he's 47, just got knee surgery, and you want him in the ring again? I don't, and this is coming from an Austin mark and a Punk fan.

That's my point, it ISN'T going to be the main event. As long as John Cena is breathing, CM Punk will NEVER main event WrestleMania with anyone other than him or Rock. If it's the main event then fucking go for it and let Punk win, otherwise, NO. And neither of those are going to happen.

Austin's winning I'll give you that now, but I do think it could main-event. Rock is a bigger star than Austin and so is probably Lesnar, I don't buy Triple H and Undertaker as bigger stars even today. Obviously it won't happen but promote Stone Cold returning to RAW to confront CM Punk for a month and I bet you that would draw the biggest segment of 2012, Just my opinion (barring RAW1000).
Austin became 'less' of a draw from 2005 to 2010 because he essentially became a nostalgia/comedy act. Its been over a year since he's been on WWE television and im pretty sure that's somewhat by design and all while they've been planting this seed of Punk and Austin. not only that but Austin is in a position where he won't comeback for the midcard, I think the best way for management to solve it would be to simply say whichever of the two big feuds (lets say for arguments sake Punk/Austin and Rock/Cena) was gaining bigger numbers and more steam would get the nod, I genuinely would be more confident with Punk and Austin hitting a lot of 'homeruns' and gaining more steam, also the fanbase has seen Rock and Cena go at it.

Who knows. For the sake of booking, Delaney could go over Goldberg. Speaking directly to this scenario, there's not much to base it off of. Logic says the current star wins it, but Rock - Cena at Mania kind of trumps that.
Re: WWE.com asks fans who would win- Austin or Punk...
Rock had Hurricane beat, he lost because of Austin. Different circumstances. This is assumed to be a 1 on 1 match without interference. Picking any winner in that situation is easy.
