Re: WWE willl never get edgy again

WWE gets edgy every now and then. The last time I really enjoyed watching it was during the Summer of Punk. It got pretty edgy then, and of course guys like Rock and Lesnar will make it edgy. Other wrestlers need to take lessons from Punk, Rock, and Lesnar and then maybe we'll get a decent product.

Re: WWE willl never get edgy again

Actually, come to think of it, that Punk/Austin interview felt relatively edgy to me, especially that awkward handshake at the end. It's been a while since WWE did an interview segment full of that kind of understated, simmering violence. Lesnar's little promotional clips before ER felt that way too (all hilariously undercut by the contract signing, of course). Maybe all WWE needs is to freshen up its approach to staging in a meaningful way. Everything feels like it's written off a template these days, like their script is just a big madlibs activity book. Nothing can feel dangerous that way.

The PG Era never existed, we are in the "Linda Era".
WCW was PG when NWO started...

The reason why we don't get fresh ideas and promotions rising in American Pro Wrestling is because the majority of the community is happy with the same old shit and will reject any chance of change. There is a risk in doing new things, 9 times out of 10, it leads to 50+ pages of bitching and moaning. While business gets turned into a dictatorship and more and more out of touch. Support the indies, support New Pro Wrestling.

It might take 1000 years but the WWE will get edgy again at some point.

Re: WWE willl never get edgy again

I have no idea what Linda's motivation for politics is - but that's neither here nor there. The SPECIFIC things the Democratic candidate criticized (the degrading content from the 'edgy' eras, looking the other way as wrestlers used steroids and drugs) are valid criticisms of a product largely aimed at children. And it's not a new thing - WWE has always had a large youth audience.

With the right bookers and talent that knows how to improv & perform storylines, the WWE could be relevant to a more mature audience. There are lots of movies that are ostensibly made for kids, but have stories that touch or amuse the adults that go with them. Michiko Kakutani is probably never going to give a Mick Foley book a glowing review, but the two options don't have to be Barney or South Park.
