The Attitude Era was terrible - and most of the high points could have been created without the blatant gross-out, t & a, and "adult" content. The themes that carried the best stories (Man vs. Authority, romantic intrigue, and issues of identity) rely more on the writers' timing and wrestlers performance than gore and boobies.
But it add realism and impact. If someone says to someone that he is a son of a bitch or if there is blood during a match, it got a bigger impact and everyone will take it seriously
I'm sure you'd agree there's a difference between not stopping the match if one of the wrestlers breaks the skin in the course of the match and wrestlers blading and gushing blood all over the mat every other match.
I'm inclined to agree with Jim Cornette's opinion that hardcore wrestling used as heavily as it was in the late 90s dulled the suspension of belief required to enjoy wrestling.
part of the problem of them trying to make new stars is with all these women and kids there it is next to impossible - it's like david beckham syndrome with families that used to turn up to football to just SEE david beckham and not actually watch what they paid to attend for which was the football
the women and kids with their cena t-shirts don't want to see any new breakout stars but just john cena and if anyone else gets the spotlight they aren't interested and for that reason wwe are shooting themselves in the foot longterm as the families will get bored of it sooner or later and ratings and attendances will drop even more

Cena didn't bleed that badly during his match against Lesnar and there was no need to stop his match and why people think there was blood in every match ? No but when a fight is personal, when this is about two person who wants to kill eachother, the blood can make it so better
Maybe after the elections should Linda lose that bid for her political career then maybe, just maybe they'd try and experiment being edgy again. But for now, if I wanted something edgy, there's always TNA and other independent organizations..

our memories are great feuds just like everyone else..
Asenath's right, guys - the best bits of the Attitude Era could be recreated wonderfully in a PG show. They just don't have the creative juices to do it.
