Stone Cold's 2001 heel run

What was your opinion on this? I personally loved it, but it didn't "work". In Austin's DVD, everyone says that Austin was a "heel", but he still got cheered. They tried everything possible to make him heel and it didn't work. Hell, Austin said himself that he wanted Triple H to help him out getting over as a heel and even that didn't work. It was still a very enjoyable run to me, who can forget the Angle segments :lmao? This was also my favorite year from Austin post neck injury in terms of match quality. It seemed like he had a quality TV match every week, loved every match he had with Benoit.

I liked it a lot at the time. Only thing was they made him look like a bitch on several occasions which to some extent ruined his "invincible" credibility

Well, that is sort of unavoidable with Austin. He was arguably even more malevolent back in 1996-1997 and people still cheered him.

I enjoyed it, but it turned a lot of people away.

I agree, but in his DVD Austin seemed sort of disappointed in his heel run and that had to be part of the reason.

I liked it for the first few weeks but then it got stale

I was pretty out of wrestling during this time, but have enjoyed watching promos and matches on youtube for years.

I think it would have been more successful if they didn't turn Austin's character into something completely different. Seriously, hugging Mcmahon and giving him gifts? Thats just dumb. Should have just stuck with a sick sadistic person obsessed and overwhelmed with keeping the WWF title.

Singing with the Rock, while a fun moment, was just dumb from a character standpoint and he was never the same ever again even when he returned face.

I loved this character. Realistically, we can't expect one person to stay exactly the same for their entire main event run. (Ahem.... Cena?) People probably would have gotten to the point where they were tired of seeing Austin vs. McMahon, or at least that's my opinion on the matter. It was time for a change, and it was a refreshing side of the Stone Cold character.

I thought the segments during this run were hilarious. Not so much at first, because he was just a badass heel (beating Lita / Hardyz down with chairs) But the cowardly heel that we grew to love created great TV. His constant feeling of wanting and needing Vince's attention and affection was just such a 180 turn from the Stone Cold that had been white hot for years, that it was entertaining.

Stone Cold singing, playing guitar, and wearing a cowboy hat, trying to out-do Kurt Angle, just for the happiness of Vince McMahon? Brilliant. Just brilliant.

i think it was bad timing, rock was leaving so austin had no number 1 face to work with

austin had mcmahon as a heel force along with the the likes of the rock and such in there stable

rock had hhh was a monster heel in 2000

austin and hhh were the two biggest names post wm17 and both were heels
