It was refreshing to see Austin being something other than the mad ass kicker. Too bad he didn't have a top face to go against. Would've made his heel run one of the best of all time. That's all he needed.
i felt the same. hated it with a passion at first, but then kinda liked it and found some of the shit he did funny. i remember the first time he started saying "What?!" to the crowd at the end of sentences all the time and everyone was confused and didn't know how to react. To this day people, still chant that sometimes. Also, the shit with Debra's cookies and he for some reason tried them in the ring and pretended to like them to her face, but then turned and made a disgusted face to the crowd. she caught him and slammed the tray on his head and stormed off. he starts picking up the cookies and crumbs and shoving them in his mouth saying "no, debra look i like the cookies!" it was so stupid seeing the baddest mofo on the planet doing stuff like that, but it did make me chuckle.

Austin's heel run in 2001 is actually my favorite time in wrestling. I GREATLY enjoyed it and still get a kick out of the clips of all the crazy shit Steve Austin did during that time.

Wasn't a fan. I just live in a happy state of denial where I pretend it didn't happen.

I enjoyed his 2001 heel run as well. That said I think people where that used to him being a face didn't want to boo him.

Austin was ultra talented to the point where he could be the top face or heel and play either role amazing. The WWE had a spare and equally talented baby face at the time in The Rock to use so the Austin heel turn was doable.

I don't think Austin was ever thrilled about the heel turn though. I've heard rumors Vince wanted to keep him heel and have him face Triple H at WM 18 for the title but Austin didn't want to stay heel long enough for that to happen.

It's one of the most bizarre turn of events I've ever seen in wrestling. Austin absolutely killed that run, and in turn it almost killed his career.

He was producing gold every second he was on screen, but people didn't want to buy it. People still wanted the rattlesnake. A real shame, because Austin was perhaps at his best in 2001, both inside the ring and on the mic. He played an AMAZING heel. The matches he produced that year were phenomenal, and the segments weren't far behind.
