Who remembers this? Its probably in the top 5 most outrageous things I've seen in wrestling. I mean, its a pretty well executed stunt, shit as the match might have been. Can you imagine this happening today? I mean, from a point of view of reading from a script - this is actually murder. The funny thing about it is McMahon had cops ordered to the arena earlier in the night. I love how Cole cuts straight to the next promo like nothing happens.
Thats not the first time I've seen Undertaker with that noose. I vaguely remember an attempt to hang someone was made in the weeks leading up to this.
I remember fucking shitting my pants when seeing this live as a teenager, but then saw the wire attached to his back. Still think it shouldn't have been done though.
Pay close attention when they are putting the rope around his neck. He has a harness under his attire, I guess, and they connect it to a wire on the rope. The harness takes all of the weight as he's being "hung", while there is no pressure on his neck.
Depending on when this happened I was probably around 8 or 9 years old. I didn't watch tv very much back then so I never got to see any of the Attitude Era, but I know that this would have freaked me out. Children (at least most) are easier to scare than adults.
When Bossman returned someone joked to him backstage about having a sore neck, Billy Gunn or someone. The point of his return segment was to suggest that he actually survived the hanging with an injured neck. Though its so long ago, might be wrong.
This was simply shock TV antics. Came with the time. There is no way they would do this again, I mean they fired Daniel Bryan for tie choking Justin Roberts.
I was more offended when JBL tried to hang another Canadian wrestler named Chris Jericho about six months after wrestling's biggest tragedy.
Edit: What made the Higher Power angle even more stupid when it was revealed to be Vince despite having feuded with Undertaker for months, that means he wanted his own head of security to get hanged. WTF?
It was a memorable moment and something special they wanted to give the audience because it was WM and to get over Taker's devil character back then, after the crazy spots Foley took, that was a way to send the message that a HIAC can be career-threatening match even without the insane bumps. I don't really see how it's offensive TBH, it was obviously a step above but they did plenty of things like that all over the shows anyway. Vince was the real Vince back then telling people that if you don't like it, don't watch it and stood by his product. Pretty much the complete opposite from today.
I wish that Vince still had that mentality, but now his focus is getting his wife into senate. Linda already takes heat from her opponents about how she shouldn't be voted in partly because she exposes children to violence. So...yeah, if anything, it will be a very long time before we get edge-of-our-seat stuff like this again.
So glad I just ordered WWE Tagged Classics for WM 15.
Beyond how "sub" par that HIAC was, to me on a card where Austin/Rock would meet for the WWF Title. The aftermath of that HIAC no matter how many times the WWE tries to "erase" it's own history.
To me that shot of the Bossman hanging as rude & crude as it is in an age of PC (disgusting by the way) is what WM 15 will always be remembered for.
I remember it. I remember thinking WTF did I just watch and how the hell is Vince going to get away with THAT?
