Why isn't WWE building up Cena-Punk until Wrestlemania?

The WWE has a golden rivalry that can easily be the best of this era like Rock-Austin & Hart-Michaels and they are wasting their program on Night of Champions? Granted, the result makes the match and feud not a waste by a long shot, but they could've thought of some way to come up with a Punk-Cena match at Mania for the WWE title in the main event. It would feature the two best in the company at the moment fighting for the WWE championship. And this is not to say that I'm against guys like The Rock, Triple H, Undertaker, participating in the event. It's probably one of the best parts about Wrestlemania, but my issue with it is that this rivalry is the best option they have and they waste it on the summer rather than the build for their biggest PPV.

I also am not one of those guys who argues that a competitor like Cody Rhodes or Dolph Ziggler should be main eventing Wrestlemania over The Rock or Undertaker because it's a business and I'm going to be more entertained in seeing The Rock battle Brock Lesnar (just an example) in front of 80,000 screaming NY fans rather than seeing Cody Rhodes take on Dolph Ziggler.

Their match at MITB 11 is an absolute classic. Their rematch at Summerslam was great, not AS great, but still really really good. Their most recent match at Night of Champions might have been the best match of all of them. My point is, every aspect of a feud that these men engage in is gold. They have an unbelievable chemistry and great in-ring psychology. When you add those elements together, you have something special. When you add in their fanbases, promo skills, emotions and facial expressions, this is THE feud in WWE.

But why not try to stretch it out? If done correctly (which will never happen), you could wind up with an Iron Man match between Cena and Punk in the main event. And before you say "CENA IN AN IRON MAN MATCH?! LULZ", he had a really solid Iron Man match with Orton a few years back, and since Punk-Cena wrestle about 35 minutes anyway, it really makes no difference.

A PPV card with the main events like this would be incredible, in my opinion:

--Iron Man Match for the WWE Title: CM Punk (c) vs. John Cena
--Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar
--The Rock vs. Randy Orton (heel turn), some sort of tie-in to the third generation aspect could potentially make this feud very entertaining

Why can't we have something along those lines?

If WWE had not already went with Rock vs Cena for WM28, Cena vs Punk would have been the main event. I don't think the WWE knew Punk would have exploded like that during the feud last summer and they went with it.

I'd love to see Punk & Cena stay away from each other until WM29 and have one final match. But of course Rocky is gonna somehow be tied to one of these men if not both.

I'd prefer Rock vs Taker/Brock and have the main event be Punk(c) vs Cena.

In short, Cena and Punk aren't facing each other at Wrestlemania.

Because it's been done to death already. The right time to do Punk/Cena was at WrestleMania 27 when he was hot with the whole New Nexus thing. But Vince has a hard on for reality stars, so he gave it to the Miz even though he didn't deserve it.

First off, you are way, WAY overrating Punk/Cena. Its an alright feud, though I wouldn't call it the best of this era. Comparing it to Rock/Austin and HBK/Hart is downright insulting because its nowhere in the realm of being as good as either of those. And calling MiTB 2011 an 'absolute classic' is somewhat laughable. Nothing they've done has been THAT great, it happens to stick out in this era because everything else is so bad. That doesn't make IT good.

Second, over the past several years, Vince has seen how Wrestlemanias draw when there aren't celebrities and non wrestling personalities involved, and how Wrestlemanias draw when they ARE involved. Statistically, Wrestlemania draws better when there are people involved that transcend the wrestling world. Trump vs McMahon was an awesome drawing Wrestlemania. So was this year with Cena/Rock. At this point Vince knows that his roster isn't strong enough to put out a good Wrestlemania based solely on wrestling, and even if he did, he wouldn't get that mainstream media attention to rake in even more money. Hence, we won't get a Cena vs Punk headlining Wrestlemania because Vince would sooner put in Cena vs Drew Carey due to the fact that it will make him more money. If you look at the finances of the Fed, almost all of his sources of revenue are thanks to his licensing and merchandise (ie. things that don't have to do with wrestling).

Wait. How, exactly, does releasing wrestling DVDs, wrestling-themed T-shirts and other wrestling-inspired merchandise NOT have to do with wrestling?

Licensing and merch have been hugely profitable for WWE since the Attitude Era. Austin's original "3:16" shirt is still the best-selling WWE shirt ever, if I recall correctly. And complaining about celebrities and non-wrestling personalities being involved at WrestleMania? Rewatch the first WrestleMania and tell me who wins the main event.

Because Punk isn't important enough to face a guy like Cena at WrestleMania

Disagree completely. If The Miz was good enough, Punk's good enough. And Punk's waaay hotter right now than Miz was when it was announced he'd be facing Cena at WrestleMania. Give Punk and Cena seven and a half more months to build on what they already have, and your main event will more than sell the card to most viewers. The remaining undecided viewers would then be swayed to watch the show because of Taker/Lesnar and a non-main event match featuring The Rock. You can put him anywhere on the card and it would sell; it doesn't have to be the main event.
