Re: 5 star matches recently?

I could seem very biased as i'm a HUGE mark for Shawn Michaels but i don't understand how some of his matches were not given a five star rating and there are a few Kurt Angle ones as well that definitely should be. This is why i don't really care for anything Dave Meltzer has to say when it comes to match rating as he has a weird love for wrestling in Japanese wrestling over American wrestling and it's rare he'll give an American wrestling match a five star ratings but i'll list a few which were five stars in my opinion.

Stone Cold Steve Austin/Triple H at No Way Out in 2001
Shawn Michaels/Triple H at Summerslam in 2002
The Elimination Chamber at Survivor Series in 2002
Chris Benoit/Kurt Angle at The Royal Rumble in 2003
Shawn Michaels/Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 21
The Undertaker/Kurt Angle at No Way Out in 2006
John Cena/Edge at Unforgiven in 2006
Shawn Michaels/John Cena on Raw in London in 2007
Shawn Michaels/Chris Jericho at No Mercy in 2008
Shawn Michaels/The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25

Re: 5 star matches recently?

Meltzer's WWE 5 star matches:

* 3/20/94 Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon (Ladder Match, WrestleMania X)
WWF Intercontinental Championship
* 8/29/94 Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Cage Match, SummerSlam 1994) WWF
* 3/23/97 Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin (Submission Match, WrestleMania
* 10/5/97 Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker (Hell in a Cell Match, In Your
House: Bad Blood) WWF Championship
* 7/17/11 John Cena vs. CM Punk (Money in the Bank) WWE Championship
Dave has such a weird way of rating matches. There has been plenty of matches in WWE that have been *****.

To have only have 5 matches rated ***** is quite ridiculous.

Re: 5 star matches recently?

meltzer is respected among many wrestlers, such as foley who opening said so

i don't always agree with him on everything but i do agree that 5 star matches should be reserved only for perfection, wm25 does NOT get 5 stars because of the botch, it was a big botch and you can't ignore it, thus not getting 5 stars

and some of the matches some of you are giving out are laughable, and it's not just the match but the crowd, the storyline, everything goes into account

some of you are saying sheamus/bryan twice in the last year LOL LOL LOL LOL, no thanks

Re: 5 star matches recently?

I'm not a big star ratings guy, but the only recent match that would deserve 5 stars is the Cena v Punk match at MITB 2011.

Re: 5 star matches recently?

Cena vs Punk is a CLASSIC. Sure it had sloppy moments but IMO those short 3 weeks was the best storyline ever in WWE history. Cena vs Punk was the best storyline in WWE history IMO. Fuck the haters, it's a CLASSIC and that's what makes it 5 stars.

I really think Taker/HBK WM 25 is also a 5 star match. Oh yeah and it's amazing how people saying Punk/Cena was too sloppy to be 5 stars but Taker/HBK is when that was just sloppy as hell as well. For crying out loud, Taker damn near broke a guy's neck.

And I've seen Benoit/Angle 2 times and I still don't get the hype.

As for Dave, he's nothing but a puro/indy mark. If it happens in WWE ****3/4. When it's two unknown Japanese guys *****. Or two guys in a bingo hall? 5 stars! How the fuck could he possibly award Elgin/Richards 5 stars? I take it Dave isn't one for storytelling in a match and is all about the moves and the spots. His 2004 MOTY really shows his bias for puro stuff.

Haha, how often do you guys bitch about the lack of good matches.

I just laugh at you and watch Superstars every week.

Re: 5 star matches recently?

The last legit 5-star match I can think of was HBK/Angle at Mania 21. I would say Angle/Taker at NWO 2006 if not for the ending. Sorry but HBK/Flair, HBK/Taker(the last 2), Punk/Cena aren't 5-star matches. They were either too slow to start/dragged on, too many false finishes or had noticeable botches. IMO you had more 5-star matches in a 2 year span from 2002-2004 than you have in a seven year span from 2005-2012.

Re: 5 star matches recently?

Cena/Punk is not a classic imo. Too many botches.

Not Taker's fault. It was the cameraman's fault. and it added a lot to the drama of the match.
