Pretty much this. If Lesnar had stayed, he probably would be bigger than Cena is now (although Cena more than likely wouldn't be anywhere near as big). Lesnar was still pretty fucking big in his WWE run and was the number 1 guy pretty much from No Mercy 02-about No Way Out 04.
Cena will certainly endure once Brock is gone. If Lesnar left right now, everyone would be over it in a week. Once Cena leaves it will be felt for ages throughout the Universe.
Lesnar was the biggest draw on ppv for a while. He was pretty much the man from summerslam 2002 to no way out 2004. But I assume that given how much tv time that Cena gets not only in the WWE but other places that he's a bigger star.
But seriously, I have been away from WWE for about 2 years and in that time I have heard Lesnars name a LOT through his ufc run, but jack all about WWE, I didn't even know if Cena was around and I say that as a huge fan
Cena is massive WWE wise, his longevity and impact completely top Lesnar. But Lesnar has done a whole lot outside of WWE, he attempted to play football again and then held the championship in UFC. Plus, in the WWE, Lesnar was helping hold up the company massively for a year or two. It's about even, to be honest.
6 or 7 mmo fights is nothing hes been beat by guys in UFC that only a hand full of guys actually know sure he won the heavyweight belt but how the hell did he even deserve a shot at it in the first place he only got the shot coz he was made famous by wwe plain and simple
As popular as UFC and MMA in general is John Cena is still the bigger star and anyone who says different is either biased or a blind mark. I can't believe some people actually believe that John Cena is only where he is because of Brock Lesnar leaving in 2004 seeing as John Cena was already the most popular wrestler in WWE whilst Brock Lesnar was still around and was turned face by the fans, it is almost the same as saying Stone Cold Steve Austin only became what he did because of Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart not being around.
I think people really underestimate John Cena as far as star power goes within the wrestling industry goes as i would go as far as to say only Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Andre The Giant and Ric Flair have been or are bigger stars than John Cena within the wrestling industry. He may not have been as successful as Hulk Hogan or The Rock as far as mainstream appeal goes or have revolutionized and been anywhere near as popular as Stone Cold Steve Austin but to be the face of WWE for longer than anyone outside of Hulk Hogan does mean a lot and is something that people like Randy Savage, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Triple H, The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar never managed to become at any point.
It was because of his WWE run that Brock Lesnar had so much momentum going into his UFC career in the first place and had he simply gone into MMA without being an ex WWE star then he would be no bigger than Cain Velasquez, Junior Dos Santos or any other heavyweight in UFC nor would he have been thrust into a title fight with Randy Couture in only his second fight. Don't get me wrong i'm a big fan of Brock Lesnar and his run in WWE between 2002 and 2004 was very entertaining and some of his matches with The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit were brilliant but people overestimate just how big he was as a star in WWE.
As far as a bigger star within the wrestling industry goes it's John Cena and i'm sorry to the blind haters or blind marks but it isn't even close. As far as within sports it's Brock Lesnar and again it isn't even close because UFC is seen as a contact sport whereas WWE is at best sports entertainment. As far as mainstream goes i would have to go with John Cena because he has had the WWE hype machine behind him but has also crossed over into music and films although i'm not saying crossed over into films anywhere near The Rock's level. So because of the cross over John Cena has managed to do into films and music that has seen him become a bigger star in the mainstream than Brock Lesnar which in turn makes John Cena a bigger star than Brock Lesnar although in reality does it even matter because Cena/Lesnar is a dream feud and i'm just happy it seems it's going to happen.
Brock was a top dog in both WWE and UFC, Cena never broke anything outside the WWE. Brock wins this, but slightly.
