LOL how can it be Rocks fault? LOL I'm still amazed at this.
So Rocky should be ashamed off cutting best promos in the biz? Now that's just one helluva silly talk IMO.

There should be limits to senseless hate with no content.

That promo was pretty piss-poor. I don't see how it could of ended someone's career. All the Rock did was his catchphrases, like a lot of his other promos. Billy Gunn was never meant to be taken seriously, so that promo didn't bury him in anyway.

IIRC, that was actually the promo where the whole "IT DOESN'T MATTER- thing started.

And the Rock's promos weren't ever about content, he basically says nothing for seven minutes, Rock is all delivery, and his delivery was fucking gold in that.

Loads of wrestlers get embarrassed like that in promos, it didn't ruin his career. Billy Gunn's career ended because he wasn't very good.

Someone that the creative was gonna rename "Billy Bitchcakes" should never be taken seriously.

Re: How exactly did Rock's promo on Billy Gunn "end" his career?

Fans were very apprehensive about Billy Gunn's main event push in late '99 and during his feud with The Rock, he was constantly buried on the mic by Rock, which basically justified how fans felt about Gunn back then. But the reason his main event push didn't work was simply because he wasn't a main event guy, he was nothing more than a mid-card guy at best. I wouldn't say feuding with The Rock "ended" his career but it certainly contributed to his failed push in the main event scene.

He was fucked the day they gave him the embarrassing entrance music and went from calling him Bad Ass Billy Gunn to calling him Mr. Ass.

Yep, I think you're right. I remember this promo when he did it, and I think that really was the first time he used that line. The fact that he used that line as "God" telling someone praying to him for guidance that it doesn't matter what their name is, pretty much made it instantly popular.

Re: How exactly did Rock's promo on Billy Gunn "end" his career?

I see the argument for this, but entertainment vs sustainability. Suddenly, Cena's promo style makes sense.

WWE is filled with 'Good Ol' Boys' in power positions. It is just how it is, and I will keep calling WWE, Pro Wrestling in USA, as well as some of it's fans out on this because it is bollox. I do notice an apparent effort being made to mitigate this somewhat, but time will ultimately tell.
