I noticed that Pro Wrestling Illustrated has published their 2010 End of the Year awards.
PWI Wrestler of the Year Award: Randy Orton PWI Tag Team of the Year Award: The Motor City Machine Guns 2nd Hart Dynasty 3nd Beer Money 4nd Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov PWI Match of the Year: The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels Feud of the Year: Nexus vs WWE 2nd Bret Hart vs Vince McMahon 3nd Kurt Angle vs Mr. Anderson 4nd John Cena vs Batista Most Popular Wrestler of the Year: Randy Orton 2nd John Cena 3nd Rob Van Dam 4nd Daniel Bryan Most Hated Wrestler of the Year Award: Nexus 2nd CM Punk 3nd Miz 4nd Hulk Hogan & Eric Bischoff Most Improved Wrestler of the Year Award: D'Angelo Dinero 2nd Wade Barrett 3nd Sheamus 4nd Jay Lethal Most Inspirational Wrestler of the Year Award: Shawn Michaels 2nd Kurt Angle 3nd John Cena 4nd Rob Van Dam Rookie of the Year Award: David Otunga 2nd Tamina 3nd Percy Watson 4nd Corey Hollis Stanley Weston Award: Killer Kowalski Comeback of the Year Award: Rob Van Dam 2nd Kane 3nd Edge 4nd Jeff Hardy Woman of the Year Award: Michelle McCool 2nd Angelina Love 3nd Madison Rayne 4nd Madison Eagles
I find it amazing that Wade Barrett can be second in Most Improved Wrestler of the Year but not win Rookie of the Year ahead of David Otunga when David Otunga is horrible in the ring and almost as bad on the mic. I'm not one of the people who proclaim Wade Barrett as the greatest heel since Triple H but he has done a hell of a lot more than David Otunga has achieved seeing how he main evented PPV's and wrestled for the WWE title whilst also feuding with Raw's two biggest stars in John Cena and Randy Orton.
Also how can Michelle McCool honestly be Woman of the Year ahead of Madison Rayne who was great all last year in her feuds with Angelina Love, Tara and Roxxi and has carried the division up until Mickie James debut. Michelle McCool wasn't even the most entertaining member of Lay-Cool let alone the best female wrestler around and if Michelle McCool win's then why is there no Layla even in the top four considering they are exactly the same character and copy each other in everything they do.
On a positive note though well done to Shawn Michaels on yet another Match of the Year win which i believe he has won every year now since 2004 which is some achievement in my opinion when you consider that he was getting older each year and had taken more and more bumps in big matches. To win Match of the Year seven years in a row and i believe eleven in total in two seperate generations which first saw Ric Flair, Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Sting, The Undertaker, and Ricky Steamboat in the first run and then Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Samoa Joe, AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels around in his second run shows that there has never been a better in ring performer on a big stage that Shawn Michaels.
Alright, it's pretty obvious no matter who does the awards, there will be a great number of people that disagree. I get that. In fact, I guarantee if anyone starts a thread here for 2010 awards winners, people will disagree for various reasons ("x" promotion not includes, why is only the US included, kayefabe reasons vs non kayefabe reasons, and general opinions)
However, it's pretty clear ROH was not considered at all.
Steen vs Generico for Feud of the Year should of at least made a runner up. Hell of alot better than Cena vs Batista and Hart vs McMahon. And Kings of Wrestling should at least be a runner up in the tag team category.
If fans voted, then I guess nothing should really be said. Fans voting is the worst way to go with awards in my opinion. Because fans do not watch everything, otherwise every show for every promotion would be the same TV rating. I think major groups should get a committee, interview each member to make sure they kept on each promotion, and then they get a vote.
All this aside, the award that pisses me off the most is "Most Inspirational Wrestler of the Year".
Now I don't know who should win (simply cause wrestler don't "inspire" me) but why did Shawn Michaels win this? If I learned anything from him kayefabe wise, it's that if I cry enough, refuse to move on, overexaggerate, and not act like team players (DX losing the titles) then I can STILL get what I want. I don't think that's very inspirational.
At least if Cena won, I could say I understand because of the whole "Never give Up" thing he does.
Daniel Bryan should've gotten the comeback or at least runner up. He's the only one that got fired and came back and got a big push. I don't see how Jeff made the top 4. He came back from winning 3 world titles in '09 to one world title in TNA in '10? That's the opposite of a comeback.
Otunga? I cant fathom why he won that award. Suprised the Hart Dynasty got so high considering how WWE treats its tag division and I guess readers of PWI thought Lethal magically got good in 2010 instead of just being put in the forefront more.
Does anyone know when the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards are out? Those awards are a lot more credible than this. Otunga rookie of they year? :cuss:
Worst Major Wrestling Show: TNA: Turning Point Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic: Rob Terry's unprotected chair shot by Homicide.
