King of the Ring 1999 Review
KotR Quarter-Final: X-Pac vs. Hardcore Holly - **
Pretty boring, Harcore Holly with the upper hand most of the match, gets DQ'ed after he hit's X-Pac with a chair, therefore X-Pac picks up the win.
KotR Quarter-Final: Kane vs. The Big Show - ** 1/2
Basically a power vs. power match, some good back and forth offense by both Kane and the Big Show here, Kane choke's out the Big Show toward the end of the match and then hits him with a steel chair without the ref seeing and picks up the win.
KotR Quarter-Final: Mr. Ass vs. Ken Shamrock - ** 1/4
Shamrock is injured during the match because Steve Blackman attacked him on the Sunday Night Heat match before the PPV. Shamrock gets his ass kicked through most of this and doesn't do much, the ref ends the match after he starts bleeding from the mouth awarding Billy Gunn the victory.
KotR Quarter-Final: Road Dogg vs. Chyna - ** 1/4
This match was ok, Chyna had the upper hand through most of the match cos Road Dogg didn't want to hit her cos she's a woman, so he ends up on the receving end of the brunt of the offense. Then halfway-three quarters of the way through the match he decides enough is enough and begins to wrestle. Triple H is at ringside for the match and tries to interfere when he can but HBK (in the role of the commisioner at the time) comes to ringside and sends HHH back to the locker room. Chyna attempts a low-blow on Road Dogg but he is wearing a protective cup so Chyna ends up with an injured arm and Roadd Dogg wins after a Pumphandle Slam.
The Hardy Boyz vs. The Brood - **
This when the Hardy's weren't that well known, but were still kinda over, a decent enough tag match, nothing that special though. Some decent wrestling on both parts, the Hardyz pick up the win after Gangrel spits 'blood' (that chalice he always used to carry) in the face of Edge thinking it was one of the Hardyz.
KotR Semi-Final: Mr. Ass vs. Kane - ** 1/2
Another kinda 'meh' match, some good wrestling, not much to say about it really, best part is when the Big Show comes down to the ring and hits Kane with a steel chair in retaliation for their match earlier. Billy Gunn picks up the win.
KotR Semi-Final: X-Pac vs. Road Dogg - ** 1/4
Was pretty good because at the time X-Pac and Road Dogg were the only two remaning members of DX and to see them wrestling against each other in the semi-final was one of those moments where you think, is he gonna turn on him after this match. Some decent wrestling but, what can you expect from X-Pac and Road Dogg at this point...really. X-Pac won the match and they shook hands and remained as DX, which at the time was rather dire.
The Undertaker vs. The Rock for the WWF Championship - ***
This was a good match, The Rock nearly beat Taker about 1 or 2 minutes into the match but the Undertaker punched out the ref right at the beginning. The match starts in the ring but then it turns into a brawl as they go down the aisle and into the crowd, at one point the Rock grabs a drink from a fan and hits Taker with it. This was what most matches at the time were all about, brawling through the crowds, not too much technical stuff back in '99. A fun to watch match, HHH comes down to the ring to interfere again, and The Rock ends up on the receiving end of a tombstone, giving Taker the win and retaining the title.
KotR Final: Mr. Ass vs. X-Pac - ** 3/4
The final of the KotR tournament, a good match for the most part, although nowadays still kinda 'meh' looking back on it. I never have much to say about Billy Gunn's matches these days as they really weren't that good imo. Billy Gunn picks up the win about 6 mins in becoming the 1999 KotR.
Shane & Vince McMahon vs. Steve Austin in a Ladder match - *** 1/2
Fun to watch but another brawl, Austin dominates throughout the match, Vince and Shane get in pretty much no offense, they end up crashing through all of those ladders that make up the PPV set at the aisle entrance thing. Whenever Austin went to grab the briefcase for the 50% ownership of the WWF someone kept pulling the briefcase higher so he couldn't reach. Shane ends up grabbing the briefcase for the win, and that means he now owns Austin's 50% of the WWF.
Overall PPV rating - 6/10
