Re: How many years have you been watching wrestling?
I used to hate pro wrestling, but for some strange reason I liked the moves like the Scorpion Deathlock and the Powerbomb. I played wrestling video games as a kid, so that's how I knew about guys like Bret Hart, Razor Ramon, and Yokozuna even though I did not watch the WWF.
However, one day my older brother (he was in HS at the time) brought home WCW vs. NWO: World Tour for the N64. I loved that game, and it made me start watching Monday Night Nitro in 1997. I kept watching WCW regularly until it became obvious to me that no one would ever really beat the NWO, guys like Booker T and Chris Benoit would never be in the main event, and Goldberg would never stop being an idiot. So I watched from the end of 1997 to the end of 1999.
While Nitro was on a commercial, I would turn to USA to watch Raw is War and Warzone. I liked Austin vs. Mcmahon and I also liked the New Age Outlaws and X-pac in DX, but the Rock was the guy who kept me watching. I found him to be fairly attractive, great on the mic, and pretty good in the ring. At the age of nine, I would tune to get creeped out by the Ministry (I liked Undertaker for that; he's great in Wrestlemania Arcade) and watch Vince piss people off, but the Mcmahon-Helmsley Era was the first storyline I watched from the begining. I liked it at first, but then HHH began to remind me of a certain HHH at WCW. I hated the Two Man Power Trip despite the great matches that came out of it because at the time, I thought it ruined Austin's character. Kids at school and I looked forward to the Invasion, but most quit watching because they didn't like that the WCW wrestlers were made to look bad. I felt the Invasion was flawed, but the Rock, Chris Jericho, Stone Cold, Booker T, RVD, and Rhyno made it watchable. Afterwards, it seemed that the WWF had no direction with their storylines. I liked Brock Lesnar in the ring, but I felt he had no charisma unless if he was with Paul Heyman. Rock came back in 2002 and he was still my favorite, but when he left again I asssumed that he had retired. I got sick and tired of HHH beating everybody on Raw, but the final straw was the Katie Vick storyline. That ruined Kane for good. So from the end of 1998 to the end of 2002, I watched WWF regularly.
Sometimes, I watched lucha libre on Univision and Galavision. I liked AAA and CMLL, but my limited knowledge of Spanish made it hard for me to fully understand what was going on. The Internet and import games such as Toukon Restuden for the PSX and All-Japan featuring Virtua (I think that was the name) for the Saturn introduced me to Japanese pro-wrestling, which I became a fan of. At one point, I used to think that Japanese pro-wrestling was the best of the three because they were serious and it was a legit competition unlike in the US, but now I know better. I haven't seen lucha libre since 2000, but I've been watching videos of HUSTLE and old stuff from New Japan every now and then.
When I found out that Y2J was coming back, I tried watching the WWE again. It was better than in 2002, but it wasn't enough to keep me a regular viewer. However, with Regal becoming King Regal and Jericho becoming his old self, I might start watching Raw again. On the other hand, that Smackdown last Friday was godawful. Why did Smackdown become such a garbage show? I remembered it being very good in 2002, but I could not watch it as often.
