Pick a wrestler....and develop!
I have always been intrigued by the storyline behind a character when a creative writing team truly puts their effort into creating a truly special character.
Ex-Kane being burned by his brother and coming for revenge along his brother...only for us to discover that he wasn't truly burned and he was simply mentally scarred. A bit of it may seem stupid, but what a great way to twist the storyline after the burnt makeup on Kane didn't seem that believeable.
Or take for example the story of Mankind. He came in looking for Taker, then he is taken under Vince's wing who will soon be abused by his power making him a fan favorite. His passion for his childhood character Dude Love transforms into a 3 character personality which affects every match differently.
So take one wrestler, any wrestler and give him a story. Give him a reason to how he or she has come to be. It can be anything from Victoria being one of the Godfather's hoes, worked the streets, saved up money to go to wrestling school and became women's champion. Anything! Just thought I'd be a good idea.

Re: Pick a wrestler....and develop!
I always liked the idea of a young wrestler, maybe second or third generation, who is hyped as being the future of the sport and the next big thing. He would have an entourage that constantly pushes him and critisizes him for making mistakes, basically treating him pretty badly. Eventually, the pressure would get to him and he would snap, Brian Pillman style, and become a complete lunatic.

That actually sounds pretty interesting. Pushed to the limit. They can do vignettes before he actually debuts sort of showing him as this golden boy, hometown hero, groomed for success. Then after a few months playing that angle and a crucial loss his trainers/managers/father, what have you comes down on him hard and he snaps. Yeah, pretty sure I've seen it before but it's a pretty realistic angle that could be relatable and entertaining.

That seems like a really good idea. A storyline like this could be used on a lot of superstars that need that little push such as Dykstra, Shelton, Carlito, Nitro, etc. He could have a wrestler he always aspired to be and now that he's gone psycho, he will stop at nothing to be just like him.

I think that idea is kind of what they were going for with Carlito but it just didn't get a significant push or work too well. Which is a shame because I'd like to see Carlito become one of the future stars of the company.

The only thing was, it's Carlito's fault for not winning those matches.
I think the idea is get this "next big thing" and well, basically take Randy Orton, give him a manager or posse who constantly criticizes him despite his winning, and then have him just snap.
Matt Striker could do that, even.

Yeh, the whole posse criticizing a superstar thing...they are sort of in the middle of an angle like that with the New Breed. I mean, Matt Striker is getting heavily criticized for losing every week and costing the New Breed matches and it would be a good way to give him a run, just go psycho on the New Breed.

The only problem with that is that as a teacher, Striker hasn't really shown much in the way of ruthless aggression.
I just realized that they slightly did this angle with Eugene.
Didn't really work well for obvious reasons.

Re: Pick a wrestler....and develop!
I think the "going psycho" thing is kinda easy. I would take Randy Orton, back in 2004 and use his heritage to build him. He is bred for sucess in this business. The son and grandson of legends who achieves greater heights than those who came before him under the tutelage of Triple H and Flair. Even make parallels between Orton's father and grandfather with H and Flair. Then when he takes his place, reaches his destiny, he is destroyed by his "Father" figure. Instead of becoming something of a joke in the main event, his self-doubt would only lead him to realize greater truths about himself. He would even go to the man who he beat for the title, Benoit for help. After all, Benoit hasn't lost a match to Triple H since his World title victory at XX. Orton could mature as a wrestler and a person leading the locker room against Evolution, triumphing at some points, and having to face betrayal as some of his "friends" join the other side. Eventually, Orton would become the symbol of the future and Trips of the Old order leading to an epic showdown on the grandest stage of them all.
