Legend or Not? V.5 Jake "The Snake" Roberts
This is the 5th volume of a series of threads I will be doing with the purpose of discussing if certain people are legends or not.
Sor Far we have done:
"Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig
"Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase
"Ravishing" Rick Rude
"American Dream" Dusty Rhodes
For this one we are doing Jake "The Snake" Roberts.
So, what do you people think? Is he a legend?
This should actually be interesting because he never did hold any major championships in his career. He did have some good fueds though, I'm interested to read your thoughts.
BE SPECIFIC. Not just a yes or no, thats lame.
At the end of your post say who you would like to see next in V.6. Try to pick people that will create a debate or something, most of the people used so far have been unanimous.

Re: Legend or Not? V.5 Jake "The Snake" Roberts
Yeah, I believe Jake is a legendary figure in the WWF/WWE. Like you said he has had some memorable feuds but just never held a top tier championship. His best feud IMO was with "Ravishing" Rick Rude, probably his most memorable too. His short feud with Hogan was cool, I can remember when he kept getting face chants, and the people were shouting "DDT!" when Hogan was a top face in the company at the time.
Who's Next- Hmm... Tully Blanchard.

Re: Legend or Not? V.5 Jake "The Snake" Roberts
Jake "The Snake" Roberts can easily be called a legend, but I think that his career could have been so much more. His promo skills have never been bettered, he was a master of ring psychology (he actually made a blindfold match watchable), he invented the DDT and was probably the most convincing heel of all time. If Roberts had stayed with WWF in 1992 (instead of moving to WCW) I believe that he would have held at least one WWF championship in his career. When he returned in 1996 he was a shell of his former self. WWE exploited his misery and alchohlism for the sake of storylines and jokes and made him look washed up and broken. It was tragic and a pathetic waste of a great talent. I think WWE should employ hom to teach youngsters how to cut convincing promos.
Next: "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan or Bobby Heenan.

Re: Legend or Not? V.5 Jake "The Snake" Roberts
Jake Roberts is a legend and that there is absolutely no doubt about and the fact he never won a major title only add's to his legend as being arguably the greatest to have never won a major title in his career.
He had some of the most memorable feud's in WWE history like the one with Rick Rude over his then wife Cheryl, the classic feud with Ted DiBiase in the late 80's and early 90's and the feud with Rick Martel in which Martel "blinded" Jake and they had their legendary Blindfold match at WrestleMania 7 but for me Jake Roberts really became a legend when he turned heel in 1991.
His turn on the Ultimate Warrior after playing all those mind games with him during Warrior's mini feud with Undertaker were great to watch and to go from such being big time face he turned into a major heel with ease because of his great adaptibility.
Its a shame Warrior messed everything up as the summer of 91's main feud was meant to Warrior/Jake which could have been very good in the build up even if Jake may not got a great match out of The Warrior, instead Jake went on to feud with Randy Savage which was another great feud and the one that really made Jake the major heel he was back in 1991.
Their match at a little known PPV called "Tuesday in Texas" wasn't as good as it should have been mainly because all the focus that noght was on the Hogan/Taker WWF title rematch so Savage and Jake didn't get too much time but their feud ending match at Saturday Nights Main Event just after Royal Rumble was great.
After the feud with Randy Savage Jake went on to have his final feud at the time in WWF with a freshly face turned Undertaker which could have been better but was quite rushed but the match at WrestleMania 8 was still a very good one.
I wasn't really a fan of Jake in WCW and his feud with Sting or his return to WWE either in early 96 as i felt his was past his best then and his drug and drink problems were well known at that point but based on his first WWE run alone there is no doubt in my mind that Jake Roberts is a true legend of the business and probably the best wrestler never to have won a major title.

He had some great matches, and he had a great match with undertaker at wrestlemania, I forget which one,but you could tell he was going down to mid- card when he was on an episode of "boy meets world"

Re: Legend or Not? V.5 Jake "The Snake" Roberts
I believe Jake is a legend based off the feud with Randy Savage alone and the fact that he did create the DDT. His legacy could of been alot better if he would of stayed with WWE instead of leaving after Wrestlemania VIII. Had he stayed, I believe Randy Savage/Jake would of had a title feud (and yes Undertaker would of been defeated or at least won by DQ or something at Wrestlemania) since Jake was so over as a heel at that time. But what's done is done. With that said, he is still a legend.

A Legend for sure. Jake "the Snake" Roberts is the master of Ring Psychology he invented on of the greatest moves of all time the DDT and he could work the mic like no other. He was great surely one of my all time favourites. I loved his feud with Randy Savage and Rick Rude
