Re: Official WWE DVD Help & Review Thread
Don't know if it belongs here but:
The WWE will have a DVD on Dory Funk Jr. and the Funk family of Wrestling
Quote:
The mood was warm and nostalgic and the television lights were glaring and hot. Dory Funk Jr., for a moment, seemed lost in the past and another personality. Gone was the crazed professional wrestler who screams into TV cameras, jaws with fans and brutally twists an opponent's limbs.
In his place was another Dory: soft-spoken, introspective, intelligent and reverential. The history of Dory Funk is the history of professional wrestling. It's about family bonds, wild entertainment along with dedication and sacrifice.
Funk's story is why one of Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment television production crews came to Ocala on Thursday. They were at the Funking Wrestling Conservatory on 36th Avenue to film the owner of the wrestling school.
The WWE considers Funk and his family, including his late father, Dory Funk Sr., and brother, Terry Funk, wrestling legends. The WWE is making a DVD honoring Dory and his family as part of its "legends" series. It could be released later this year.
"For me this is a thrill," Funk, 65, said, during a break in the filming. "That the WWE would come to Ocala for me is really an honor. It's the kind of recognition that makes it all worthwhile."
Kieran Bent, an associate producer for the WWE, said it was worth the trip to interview Funk.
"Dory is one of a kind and so are the other members of his family," Bent said. "This is one of the greatest families in wrestling history. We're here doing this DVD to help preserve that history and give something back to wrestling."
Dory Funk Jr. held the NWA championship belt for nearly 4 years. Terry Funk also held that belt, making them the only two brothers ever to win that title.
"When you consider what Dory and Terry did and the impact of their father as a wrestler and promoter, it's a remarkable family history," Bent said.
Listening to Dory Funk talk during the television interview, was like hearing a history of wrestling. He mentioned other wrestling families, including the Harts, the Von Erichs and the Guerreros. He also talked about facing such opponents as Ric Flair, Jack Brisco and Harley Race.
Funk also talked about growing up and traveling the country with his father, as they moved about every three months so his dad could find more wrestling dates.
"Other kids looked at my father as a hero," Funk said on camera. "As a kid I used to dream I could do all the things my father could do. I wanted to be just like him."
The family finally settled near Amarillo, Texas, and Dory Funk Sr. would often take his son to a ring he built in their garage. There the father would "stretch" his son and teach him tough lessons about wrestling and life.
"My father expected excellence," Funk said. "I was expected to be perfect." After starring in football at West Texas State University, Funk followed his father into pro wrestling. That was nearly 45 years ago.
Despite the reminiscing, Funk doesn't dwell on nostalgia.
"In this business, you have to live in the present," he said. "There's no room for success if you live in the past."
A major part of Funk's present is his wife, Marti. She is his second wife and a minister's daughter who grew up in Florida. They were married in 1985 and settled in Ocala about two years after the wedding.
It wasn't exactly love at first sight for the Funks. She was not a wrestling fan but went to a match with one of her girlfriends. Funk was a bad guy in the ring.
"I thought he was so naughty and stupid, what a heel," Marti Funk said. That impression changed when she met him away from the ring on a date. "He was smart, nice and cute."
Dory Funk has three children, including Dory Funk III, who is a doctor in Colorado. Another son, Adam, is a computer programmer and a daughter, Penny, has given him three grandchildren.
These days, Funk spends most of his time teaching aspiring wrestlers at his wresting school in Ocala. "Sometimes they think it's easy, but this is a hard life and a hard business," Funk said. He added the school emphasizes three areas: safety, performance and television.
"I'm just awestruck by him, I listen to everything he tells me," said Vicki "Miss Vicki" Vongunten, one of his students. "You can see it in his eyes, he cares so much about wrestling."
Claudia "The Claw" Reiff says you can sum up Funk's philosophy "with the word 'discipline.' He teaches how to wrestle and he teaches you to entertain. He's always talking about the 'flair for the dramatic' and tells you how to put on a show."
After the interview, Funk stepped into the ring with six wrestlers, most of them students.
"Pro wrestling is about technique," said Funk, wearing a black sweatsuit and red cap. The wrestlers warmed up with exercises, a few body slams and then started battling each other.
One match, between Johnny "Magnum" Downing and Blain "Rage" Reddick seemed to get out of hand. Blain put a hold on Magnum and wouldn't let go. "Get off him, Blain, stop it," Funk said.
Blain didn't listen and taunted Magnum. Finally, Blain let go. Magnum then belted him in the chops and pushed Blain into and over the ropes. Magnum jumped over the ropes onto the concrete floor and bashed Blain's head into a metal garage door.
Afterward, Funk insisted that Blain and Magnum meet at center ring.
"Blain, I demand you shake his hand," Funk said. Blain looked down at the blue ring floor, looked up at Funk and finally offered his hand.
"Don't do that again," Magnum said shaking it.
It was a classic lesson in pro wrestling: part mayhem and all show.
"Was that real?" a spectator near the ring asked.
Dory Funk didn't answer. He just smiled.

DVD about the Funks sounds good. If they are just filming now, it probably won't come out until way later this year.
