First of all, I change my
Wrestler of the Year for 2002 and 2003. I think Kurt Angle is probably the WOTY for both of those years for all the classics he had plus he won the WWE Championship both years and had ***** matches both years.
Edge/Undertaker > HBK/Flair, there’s nothing "generic" about this main event. I'm dropping Edge/Taker down to “high”
**** 1/2 after holding it up against some other matches. It's a little better than Batista/Taker which I also have at
**** 1/2.
Austin101, I have seen this PPV and you did a fantastic job reviewing it. I agree with all your ratings too. Funny thing is, I was watching Foley's DVD last night but not the Austin match, the HBK match!
Shawn Michaels vs. Mankind Mind Games '96 - this was The Heartbreak Kid's year to shine and with Mankind, he put on one hell of a physical, psychology filled wrestling clinic! The psychology here is just top notched from Michaels' work on Foley's legs to Foley attacking Shawn's head. HBK also tried to take out Foley's most lethal weapon - his hand/Mandible Claw.
There are several brilliantly timed spots that just make this fight so much more brutal and close to perfection. There are spots such as suplex on steel steps, drop toe-hold on steel steps, the awesome table spot and Sweet Chin Music on a steel chair! The match gets a lot of heat for the DQ ending it never really mattered to me and still doesn’t. Classic match that is a close to five stars as any match can get.

Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels WrestleMania 21 – In this 2005 feud, Shawn started calling himself “Mr. WrestleMania” and based on his legacy already at this event and the show stealer he put on here, he now OWNS that title justifiably!
There was one flaw in this 2005 Match of the Year that I will point out because I believe Mystery or Taroostyles pointed out before – Angle worked on Shawn’s back for most of the match but he doesn’t get beat with an Angle Slam off the top rope but instead the Ankle Lock. I guess you could argue Angle was so frustrated he couldn’t put Michaels away that he resorted to his #1 move to make the already ravaged body of Mr. WrestleMania and make him tap!
When the match was over, backstage Hall of Famer Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan told Shawn “that was the greatest match I’ve ever seen.”

"Mr. Money in the Bank" Edge vs. Chris Benoit from RAW 4/4/05 – One night after the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WM21, these two men would wrestling in a match I believed showed the true heart of Chris Benoit and the amelioration of Edge.
NO ONE in pro wrestling history can sell better than Chris Benoit. It’s a fact as far as I’m concerned. Benoit makes his arm injury look and feel so painfully realistic, you have to respect his will to still compete although he looks like he’s about to die out there in the ring. Benoit doesn’t small realistic things such as stepping out of the ring and stretching the injuried arm to get some adrenaline in it. That not only reinforces he’s hurt but the fact that he will do anything to stay in the game. Brilliant storytelling and psychology!
Edge like a calculating predator, attacks that injuried arm for the majority of the match as he should have. After ripping off Benoit’s protective bandages, Edge uses a torturing key lock on that arm which looks like it is going to fall off as Benoit screams in agony. But through all that pain and torture, Benoit “gutted out” and got the quick roll up on Edge to win the match! Wow what a fighter! Shortly after the match Edge throws Benoit into steel steps and repeatedly beats him with a steel chair.

After Edge’s merciless assault on Benoit with the steel chair, J.R. had me LMFAO!
JIM ROSS: “What a SON OF A BITCH this Edge has become!!!”
KING:“Oh come on …”
JIM ROSS: “I don’t care King! I don’t care anymore! He’s a SON OF A BITCH and you know it!!!
KING: “Well he’s a rich SOB.”
JIM ROSS: This is absolutely despicable!!! Yeah take your briefcase; I got a place where you can put that briefcase pal!”
This beat down was extremely important in getting Edge more over with the audience and even more heat. Plus the Edge/Lita/Hardy controversy was beginning to surface. Right after his Money in the Bank win, Edge was built up as well as any heel main event could be.
With the Gold Rush tournament, Hardy feud, paranoia about being World Champion and people teasing him about not ever holding it. Who can forget the first segment of the Cutting Edge with Michael Hayes?
Everything just fell into place so well for Edge this year and he would of course start 2006 becoming the WWE Champion.
