Austin101's- WWE Judgment Day 2005 Review:
"Booker...I want to have SEX with your wife! Not just normal sex...perverted sex. Beastiality Sex. I love gutter sluts like Sharmell, Book!" -Kurt Angle
-Live on PPV Sunday, May the 22nd, 2005 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota and was a SmackDown! brand-exclusive event.
-The main feud heading into the event was between John Cena and JBL for John's WWE Title. JBL didn't like the new spinner belt so he held onto the old WWE title. Something the WWE should of done......
-The broadcasters for this PPV were Micheal Cole and Tazz. This is one of Cole's more annoying PPV's so it's good that the matches are mostly well done.
-On Sunday Night Heat before the event Nunzio pinned Akio with a roll up at 3:29 in a short but sweet match.
Now, onto the PPV ......
1) MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) (c) (w/Melina) vs Hardcore Holly and Charlie Haas for the WWE Tag Team Championship
On paper this doesen't really loke note worthy at all but this was a pretty good wrestling match, never bored you once. The fans were into it and the in ring work was VERY solid. The pace wasn't definately this matches biggest strength here.
In the end Mercury pinned Haas after the Snapshot at 8:04 to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship.
Surprisingly VERY good. Hardcore Holly actually got "HARDCORE HOLLY" chants and he was working very well with Haas. MNM helped make them look even better in a good back and forth tag opener that did its job well.
This was very good for sure. Great way to kick off the broadcast!
** 1/2
2) Carlito (w/Matt Morgan) vs The Big Show
Matt Morgan (remember him)...Hey, didn't Heyman say he was the next big thing on Smackdown in late 03 before the Survivor Series?
Well yeah that's what they say about every rookie in hopes he will be. They should probably cut that out any time, honestly how many people have came and gone in a two year span because they failed? 50 at least in the WWE alone....Well he was Carlito's buddy here or manager in this match.
Carlito pinned Big Show after Morgan hit the 500 pound Big Show with the F5 at 4:41. The place popped because it was impressive and Lesnar was rumored to possibly be coming back at that time. It's too bad it never happend.
Not terrible but your basic TV type quality and sterotype match.
* 3/4
3) Paul London (c) vs Chavo Guerrero for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship
Great quick match here. So far so good on the night for the most part....a lot of impressive moves shown by London and Chavo.
This was a lot like the opener in the sense where it was quick and the pace never allowed you to become bored.
A Cruiser match gets over 10 minutes on a PPV is a shock and always a plus.
London pinned Guerrero after a 450° splash to retain the cruierweight title at 10:41.
** 1/4
4) Kurt Angle vs Booker T (W/Gutter Slut Sharmell)
When Booker was on the outside of the ring the fans chanted..."UGLY WIFE" very loud. I felt bad for Booker in a way but in another way he's the one making millions and I'm not, plus Sharmell was so fucking annoying (and she's supposed to be a babyface here) that I actually got a kick out of it.
First of all the storyline was ludicrous.
I quoted the text from one of Angle's promo's at the top of my review to show just how bad some of the stuff he said were. It was so over the top bad that it became hysterical.
The WRESTLING was very good here though. Solid brawling with some good moves, I always liked the clash of these two styles between Angle and The Booker Man.
Booker pinned Angle after reversing the Angle Slam into a small package at 14:09 for the win.
Good match, bad feud.
** 3/4
5) Orlando Jordan (c) vs Heidenreich for the WWE United States Championship
This shit doesen't even belong on Velocity.
Heidenreich was a FACE now and had a funny walk. He read poems and got friends (kids) in the audience to be his friends. He sat a little girl at ringside as one of his friends..
Okay.
Now am I the ONLY person in the world who sees something wrong with this picture? A little girl in the ring being "friends" with a big jacked up lunatic like Heidenreich.
I can't believe the fans were cheering.
Pretty close to a dud but I don't mind Orlando he's pretty funny.
Jordan pinned Heidenreich after a DDT at 4:54 for the win to retain the US title! Exciting stuff...
1/4*
6) Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero
You can see this gem on Rey's BLM set as well.
This one has great wrestling, tremendous psychology and was miles better then there pretty good match at Wrestlemania 21.
Eddie was over as a heel and got the crowd to hate him in a lot of brilliant ways, his mic skills were tremendous as a heel and just the look on his face was brilliant. A lot of back and forth, quick action in this one a lot of counters involved.
Guerrero was disqualified after hitting Mysterio with a steel chair at 18:31. The 2nd best WWE match they ever had together next to the Smackdown bout. This one was awesome though with Heel Eddie. Cole got annoying like always in the match though, especially afterwards.
Extremely close to four stars but the ending takes it down a little bit.
Classic.
*** 3/4
7) Main Event- John Cena (c) vs John "Bradshaw" Layfield in an "I Quit" match for the WWE Championship
To me this match is better then Cena vs Umaga. The reason I compare the two is because they are both gimmick matches with brawling and "hardcore" spots on PPV's in the last few years with John Cena of course.
I constantly hear that match discussed when I wonder why this match isn't quite as much? This is a masterpiece for Layfield or Cena due to the brutality both men go through in this battle. This one is entertaining, shocking and exciting throughout the whole duration.
There match together at Wrestlemania 21 was BEYOND PISS POOR so that is another reason it was so SHOCKING that it was ACTUALLY this solid. This is the best match the two would ever have together and one of the best matches in either man's career, by far.
So many memorable spots such as JBL's head going through a number of glass objects, the TV, the limo, the stage, etc. The Pipe, the extringuisher, the sick chair shot, the steps, the limo and it's door, etc. Which reminds me I guess the only real flaws here is the corny lines Cena would say when JBL kept asking him to quit. However JBL's lines were funny "Quit you punk ass bitch!" (Smacks him on his bloody head with a mic) etc, haha.....Also the fact that the door wouldn't come off the limo when JBL was being thrown into it by Cena or the blade jobs. However the blood loss and brutality more then made up for all of that. John Brawdshaw Layfield quit as Cena was about to hit him with a large exhaust pipe at 22:40 to retain the title, and he hit him with it anyway as JBL went through more glass on the stage.
An absolute war that went beyond what ANYONE expected and it was shock after shock, the bleeding and spots just didn't end.
One of the most underrated matches I've ever seen. And I've seen this bad boy three times, it just keeps getting better and better.
**** 1/4

Final Rating for WWE Judgment Day 2005 = 7.5/10
This show is very good. A lot better then I remembered and when looking at the big picture it rates very high overall. When you have your top two matches average a 4 star rating and then you have good to great stuff inbetween on a 7 match card with only one bad match, then you're in for a great ride. On the Smackdown side of things this is one of there better PPV's, still not as good as Vengeance 2003 (Which I will review later when I get there) but it is up there. Definately get this DVD for the main two matches alone.
Feedback appreciated as always if you want to discuss.....
