There's something so transparently child-like about him. Like he's running head-first into his 15 minutes and he is grinning his face off about it. This is a man who has wanted to be famous for a very long time.
It easily overshadowed the NBA awards. RAW got higher ratings, and all NBA fans were talking about on Twitter and Reddit was Lavar and clips of his entrance, his fighting poses and Lamelo saying the n word.
I was literally on social media at the time, and even the analysts on the video saw the same thing. Not sure where you were.
I'm surrounded by basketball fans and basketball players - family, coworkers, friends - and they outnumber the ones into wrestling by double figures. You know what was the topic of conversation Tuesday? LaVar Ball. Not the awards, the Ball family on RAW. Some loved it, some hated it but everyone knew about it and, in several cases, folks who hadn't watched WWE in years, or who had never admitted to watching it, started talking to me about the rest of the show.
Wrestling doesn't always only thrive because of positive word of mouth. WWE had one of their most successful eras by being controversial. I was always taught that it's good to have a role model or two for young kids on a roster, but that the older kids and the adults are watching wrestling in large part for the outlandish moments. LeMelo's n-bomb was the closest thing to controversial and outlandish RAW has had in ages and LaVar is hilarious in a silly way (imo, of course).
It's only my perception, but I'd call this media attention a small win for both LaVar (not sure it did much for his sons but it boosted his profile a bit) and WWE.
I'm actually very surprised that his appearance was well received. I didn't think it was funny at all and quite honesty it felt very contrived.
It's sickening Lavar gets so much media attention when it's his son that's the basketball star. He's obviously an egomaniac and he made a complete azz of himself on sportcenter a few weeks ago.
man wwe got so much attention for their wrestlers i mean so much talk of the miz, lesnar, man oh man ...oh wait all of it was about ball.................
