Has there been a bigger flop at creating a new superstar than the original Sin Cara

For months they hyped up Mistico (sin "caras" as JR called him) as some kind of second coming of Rey Mysterio, an international sensation who would dominate upon his arrival in WWE. in Mexico he was a huge star apparently.

but his refusal to work an American style or learn English turned crowds against him very fast, and they put a new guy behind the mask quite quickly.

since then the Sin Cara brand has been turned into nothing more than a meme, spawning exclusive Botchamania episodes dedicated to how bad he was

has anyone failed to live up to the hype as much as Mistico did?

(and don't say Roman reigns because at least he is still relevant after 3 years, Sin Cara was buried within a few months)

A Mistico or Caristico as he is now known has the potential to be one of the top guys of any promotion he is apart of and the hype he had was definitely much deserver. Theres a reason the guy was more famous in Mexico than Rey Mysterio after all. Guy had the pedigree and the talent but his ego got in the way unfortunately. At 34, I think theres money in this guy coming back under a new moniker and a run in NXT where he could iron himself out for WWE would do wonders. One of the greatest examples of why great indie wrestlers sometimes need to go through developmental.

You took all the fun out of this thread!

Sin Cara is probably at the top of the list. I'd also add TJ Perkins. He set the CW division back. He's a good talent, but he was the wrong guy to start the division with. It didn't help that his first big feud was Kendrick. I think with Neville it's too little too late. This is why I want to see Neville in the mid card scene at some point. The problem with Sin Cara is that there wasn't a backstory to him. They needed to give the fans a reason to connect with him.

Say what you want about Nathan Jones's wrestling abillity, the man had charisma and presence with a perfect character based on his real life. They need to recycle that character again because it was gold. Just take a look at his vignettes for one.

Drew McIntyre flopped big time. And unlike Sin Cara he had no language or ring style barrier to overcome, he just flopped because nobody care for his Chosen One gimmick.

The Miz, Sheamus and Drew were the sole survivor of Team Miz in 2009, the irish and The Miz ended up being world champions and feuding the likes of Triple H and John Cena, meanwhile Drew couldn't get over while he was working with Kofi Kingston a guy who in 2009-2010 was receiving pop after pop.

The biggest flop of the last 10 years must be Vladimir Kozlov, WWE tried to build him like this mega heel act, he was undefeated for almost a year and even the company let him pinned The Undertaker CLEAR, but nobody cared for him.

He received constant Boring! and You Can't Wrestle! chants, until the company realized he was just crap.

From facing Shawn Michaels to determine who will faced The Undetaker at WM 25 to being the side-kick of the comic relief Santino, that's quite a FLOP.

holy shit Koslov

a name that sends chills down the spines of wrestling fans to this day.

honestly Khali deserves a mention as well, at least in America (idk how many Indian fans he drew)

I don't know that the same thing isn't going to happen with nakamura.

Sin Cara was historically bad. Guys like Perkins and Outback Jack were bad, but they were not hyped anywhere near the level of Sin Cara.

Dan Severn came in with a bunch of hype and credentials and we soon all realized that he had no personality or charisma and was boring.

"Dr. Death" Steve Williams was supposed to be a major headliner. Then the Brawl for All happened.

Jake Roberts was hyped to no end in WCW just to come in drunk and out of shape for a match or two. This comes close.

The only thing that truly compares to and may trump Sin Cara is Renegade. Hogan and WCW hyped the "Ultimate" surprise for a long time. People were expecting Warrior. Instead they got a cheap ripoff played by an inexperienced talent who was thrust into the main event scene. People want to know what "go away heat" is, this was it. Fans were changing the channel and leaving the arenas when he came out.

Honestly, although I think its stupid, I feel like some of these wrestling companies need to be liable for the suicides of certain wrestlers when its plainly obvious they fucked their careers up for guys like Renegade and Mike Awesome. These guys probably sacrificed a lot to get to where they were only to have their careers ruined because Creative was retarded. Most people managed to get themselves back up. But some understandably just couldn't take it. We never got to know how good Renegade could've been since he was never given another chance. Awesome at least had his run in ECW and Japan but after getting ruined for the American audience and being unable to recover no matter how hard he tried obviously got to him.

Another one that you may not consider because it turned out so well is Rocky Maivia. He was hyped and pushed to the moon and made Roman Reigns in 2016 look like Hulk Hogan in 1987. Rock came ever so close to pumping gas for a living.

joke of it is though that wwe told rock that it wasnt working and they were simply forcing him down peoples throats so should just turn him heel because people wanted to boo him anyway and thus he started working, he became cool to the crowds.

rock had to be heel before he could work as a face.

its a shame they couldnt of shown the same mentality with reigns, even now roman isnt full heel, its more of a hinting game.

Luger as champ after Flair jumped ship was a massive flop. I originally included him in my post but he wasn't a new superstar. He did get a massive reaction though. That is if you consider the entire crowd chanting "WE WANT FLAIR!" during your matches a massive reaction.
