On his recent podcast, Eric Bischoff gave his thoughts on WWE doing a rematch for the women's Money in the Bank briefcase:
"I think it’s a bad move. It’s a mistake I’ve made in the past. Sometimes you learn from your mistakes. At least, sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. When you build up to a big event on PPV and you build up the stakes and you build up the expectation and you basically deliver a screwed finish and then re-match it on free tv… it diminishes the long-term expectation of future big event matches on PPV when that happens. I think it’s a really bad idea. By the way, I’ve done it and the results were always negative."
I agree with him even if it was a screwed or not the best finish, just continue with it or if you want to have a rematch then wait for Summerslam and it is not that far away.
There shouldn't have been a rematch period. If they wanted to punish Carmella for her tainted winning of the MITB briefcase they should have done something similar to what they did when Stone Cold illegally eliminated Bret Hart in the Royal Rumble. Have Charlotte, Becky, Nayalya and Tamina fight in a fatal 4 way for the opportunity to fight Carmella for her MITB briefcase. The winner(ether being Charlotte or Becky) fights Carmella the week after.
Yeah, I agree. And as Meltzer/Alvarez discussed this week, sometimes certain booking decisions are done to generate heat, but they put heat on the company rather than on the performer. This was one of those times, without a doubt.
If we were still in times when people were expected to spend a lot of money on PPVs I would agree. That's not how things work anymore. The WWE Network is cheap and you get all the events. In fact if you look at the current state of the WWE the Network is doing well and their TV shows are doing bad. They need more people to watch Raw and Smackdown. The Network is doing OK.
Bischoff isn't wrong, but they've booked themselves into a corner. If they had delayed the rematch until a PPV, the women would be doing filler bullshit that doesn't matter for 4 weeks, and NO ONE wants to see that, especially after the drastic improvements the division has made since Charlotte's trade to Smackdown. As much as I think Becky should be the MITB winner, they could've gotten some mileage and HEAT on Carmella with that controversial finish if they ran with it. If she doesn't win it back to back, they've pretty much ruined her heel momentum.
Of course it's a bad idea it's absolutely stupid, even if Carmella still wins it
Ellsworth should have helped her but not actually took the briefcase down.. shat on the match completely & it wasn't exactly stellar before that..
But this rematch idea is so stupid. If Carmella loses it's even more stupid & buries her, & I never use the word buried but this would just show how useless she is
I don't know why they had a Women's MITB match to begin with. I mean if they defended the women's title at every ppv against a fresh opponent, they're going to run through the entire division in 6 months.
Ultimately, though, this is just another example in a long line of transgressions where WWE insults their viewers' intelligence. Why is this occurrence any worse than the 100's of matches that have interference in them each year? Mahal hasn't won a match, yet without the Singh brothers' involvement. In kayfabe, why on Earth hasn't Shane or Bryan banned them from ringside, yet? There's suspending disbelief and then there's stupidity. WWE often crosses over into the latter.
I feel the exact same way and was one of the reasons for my big rant on this. You can't do things like this for the sake of ratings. It's not thinking long term, which is something WWE's been doing for the past five or so years now and it's why they're in the hole they're in now.
Well, I think it's a very nice idea and I'm paying the Network since 2014. I know the match will be on "free TV" but actually, I have an easier access to the PPVs than TV (which I don't have at all). Also, I've cut back some WWE TV shows and mostly been watching PPVs because bigger moments and best matches happen only on PPVs.
Having a rematch for the 1st women's MITB on Smackdown is a nice way of showing its fans that good matches/events can happen on TV also, not just PPVs.
Depends what they do. If it's just a 5 minute rematch you might as well get it over with on TV. I really don't understand this whole MITB situation. Are they trying to appease the complainers or was it already booked like that? It makes no sense and if they give it to Carmella anyway it will just have been a waste of time, but if they give it someone else it devalues the MITB match at MITB PPV. Who knows what they're thinking...
Most of the time I don't care what Bischoff thinks. But, in this case he is 100% correct. It is a horrible idea and one he has done himself. So, he should know.
You know what's even worse? Letting a no-talent, looks like shit, zero charisma hack like Baron Corbin anywhere near a Money in the Bank match, let alone having him win one.

Yeah.... though he wasn't my top pick to win it at the time, in retrospect Owens probably would have been GOLD with the case, considering where his character is right now. But hindsights 50/50 I suppose... well actually seeing how they're having a rematch for the women's mitb I guess it's more like 25/75
I agree even though WWE fucked up the MITB match with having Ellsworth collect the briefcase on the 'first ever' womens MITB match. It's a mistake WWE have got to live with, giving away the match again only further cheapens the Smackdowns womens division (as if it can really go any deeper at this point). You are not going to have that moment again. Whats a rematch going to really achieve? They fucked it up, redoing the match adds nothing, it's not like it's going to erase the shit show that was MITB anyway.
The history books are going to read , 'the first ever womens MITB match as won by Ellsworth...'. No one is going to remember this rematch on Smackdown. What WWE did at MITB with those women was David Arquette winning the WCW title, levels of bad. Better just to bury the memory and move on, and never have another womens MITB match ever again and like Benoit erase this match from history.
They had so many other options towards getting the case off Carmella or making it almost impossible for her to cash in, but they went with the one that made everyone look stupid.
If Battleground was next week instead of next month I'd agree, but I don't know how they could realistically delay the rematch for four weeks. What would the women do between now and then? It would bring everything to a standstill.
They shouldn't be doing the rematch at all but since they are, I'd rather they waste it on free TV rather than save it for the next PPV where I wanna see a completely new match for the belt.
Did you even read anything but the title? He said he has made the mistake himself when criticising it.
