Misconceptions about wrestling.

Which public misconception about pro wrestling annoys you the most?

I've long given up on defending it. The vast majority of the population thinks wrestling is the stupidest thing in the world, and no amount of reasonable arguments is going to change that.

The idea that wrestling fans are nerds doesn't bother me, since it can be true in a lot of cases. There's definitely an overlap in the fanbases between wrestling and other traditionally "nerdy" things, like videogames.

The one that gets to me is the perception that wrestling fans are stupid. I see this idea pushed a lot by MMA fans in particular, who act like they're enlightened because they know that wrestling is fixed, unlike us poor fools who clearly think it's all real. From my experience, there's a higher density of intelligent wrestling fans than intelligent MMA fans, yet only one fanbase takes a patronising position when talking about the other.

I don't get why it's so hard to understand that the overwhelming majority of wrestling fans are in on the act. Which public misconceptions about wrestling annoy you as a wrestling fan?

I also hate the UFC fan thing where they try and look down on me because I like wrestling as if I don't realise that it's scripted. I don't watch wrestling for the violence or competition (in fact the violence puts me off UFC if I'm honest) I watch it for the stories and the spectacle and it seems many UFC fans are too dense to understand that. I also hate the misconception that because wrestling is "fake" that the wrestlers themselves are "pussies." I'd like to see any average person take that many bumps and be able to continue to do so night in and night out, that really gets my goat tbh.

UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub put me off his podcast because of constant attacks on wrestlers' toughness every week. Before Brock's fight at UFC 200, Schaub was saying Mark Hunt should be calling him out saying "I'm not The Undertaker, bitch. I can actually fight." as if Undertaker has no level of physical competence at all. He seems quite proud of the line too, as he's used it numerous times since.

He discounts the likelihood that a prime Undertaker with a decent amount of training would be a dangerous heavyweight, and to be fair, would probably snap a scrub like Schaub in half.

There are some fighters like Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen who give wrestling a lot of respect, but the general attitude is negative. By comparison, I've never heard a wrestler be disrespectful about MMA. The worst I've heard is John Cena say he's not personally a fan, but he respects the hell out of them.

Eh, it doesn't really annoy me tbh. We've all heard the "you know it's fake right", the "they don't even hurt themselves", the "that blood's just paint" or whatever.

So far I've known one person who showed mild interest in some questions he asked, but the rest was always either the above reactions or mostly just general disinterest with a dash of "you like wrestling? Uh... o-kay then".

I never go the route of "UH, 'S NOT FAKE, IT'S SCRIPTED" and go for a huge angry rant on it though. People aren't usually open to such discussions because they couldn't care less and prefer to remain in ignorance than to minimally discuss that filthy fake-ass bullshit, and anything one might say will usually pass off as some angry nerd whining to them, so it's pretty useless. It doesn't trigger me anyway :p

The only misconception I get annoyed and it's not even annoyed it just makes me laugh. But it's specific to adults that are self proclaimed Adventure Time/ Regular Show, Comic book, Anime, or video game fans and use the phrase "wrestling is for kids".

Like not saying WWE isn't aimed at kids and not even mentioning promotions that aren't. It's just funny because it's like

"you know we're in the same boat to most people right"

Outside of that idc because I'm not in the business so I don't really feel a need to dispel misconceptions to non fans because it's not worth the time.

Do people really think of it as a nerdy fanbase? I thought more people think of wrestling fans as dumb ********. Well I think that historically Wrestling fans were often blue collar, I don't think that's as much of the case today.

I do think it has become a part of nerd culture, they just aren't stereotyped as such mainstream wise. I would love to see a smark character in a comedy show one day though full with insider terms and wrestling shirts. But that's something only wrestling fans would get anyway.

That people think we don't know it's scripted and continue to preach 'It's fake! Why do you watch it?'. My reply is 'it's just like every other tv show or action series just live in front of an audience of people.' I don't understand why people get so hellbent on stating the obvious about it in an attempt to bash it. We know it's not real dumbass. ?

These same people swear that reality tv is 100% real too, though lol

The problem I have always faced when I talked to someone is that "WRESTLING IS FOR PUSSIES, EVEN THE WRESTLERS DONT GET HURT, THE BLOOD IS FAKE, UFC IS BETTER THAN WWE". My mom who is a UFC fan has the same thinking but my dad and her brothers knows how hard wrestling is. Needless to say I showed her a video of a list of wrestling injuries(which involved Vader's eyes popping out)and she hasn't said anything since.

People think that everything in and out of the ring is padded to the point where getting thrown out of the ring would feel like as if you got face buried in a pillow. UFC fans and the fighters are so retarded for thinking that wrestling isn't as demanding as UFC.

In fact I dare say its more demanding than UFC because I don't see them working with torn muscles, broken or dislocated bones. While they work one or twice a year, wrestlers are on the road 24/7 almost 365 days a year and they don't even get to meet their family much.

It takes toll on their heath both physically and mentally. It really pisses me off when people compare UFC with WWE. Last time I checked fucking wrestling and MMA are two different things. But hey lets bash wrestling, and not shows like fucking "Keeping Up With Kardashians".

Lets not only blame them though because the genetic jackass Vince McMahon made the product into a corny shit in recent times. How can anyone take the product seriously with stuff like The New Day?! Dont get me wrong I love 'em but I'd never want someone see me watching them. Whether you agree or not, TV-PG is also responsible for WWEs recent rating problems. Who'd want to believe that after getting bashed into a ring post you'd not bleed?

Frankly, the thing I'm confronted with most is "Wrestling still exists? Is that a thing still?"
Meaning that wrestling is outdated.

And that's certainly not a misconception.

The worst are people who think that they're above pro wrestling, so basically the same people who care too much about what others think about them. Even when I stopped watching wrestling for a few years I always stuck up for it when people came out with the usual uneducated opinions about ladder spots being fake and the wrestling ring being like a trampoline.

You carry on watching your reality TV dross like TOWIE, Made in Chelsea, Geordie Shore etc and I'll continue to watch pro wrestling :)

In both primary and secondary school, I was the only wrestling fan in my class and there would always be some dumbass giving me the usual bullshit about wrestling being fake. It got so fucking sickening to listen to.

The worst and most ridiculous misconception about wrestling I've heard is that the blood was tomato ketchup fpalm

It's true though and there's nothing wrong with that. The more wrestling/wrestling fans/the wrestling industry accept this and stop trying to act as if it's some deep, emotional, serious artform the better. It's fucking fake fighting with half naked men and women. Get silly with it.

The fact that I can't possibly be a "true" wrestling fan cos I'm female. I've gotten "but you're a girl!" when I've told people my hobby/passion is wrestling lol. My reaction is always like "oh, great work detective, you figured out I'm female, good for you" haha.

Or I just get the usual "you just watch it for the hot guys" bullshit. Yeah I fly halfway across the fucking world to look at some men, not cos I actually like it or anything lol.

Its more like they have never seen a fan who's a girl in recent times. I know I haven't. Not atleast until now which is surprising, but I wouldn't judge anyone for it. My sister used to like wrestling once and stopped watching it because she found it stupid. How she doesn't find Keeping Up Kardashians is way beyond me!
