I know his feud with Owens is great, but it doesn't do any favors in showing his character presentation to everyone. I didn't follow him in NXT so I wouldn't know what exactly he is. But for several months now, he hasn't shown much about himself besides him being the guy that hates Kevin Owens. Like wtf does he do every week besides hate on Kevin Owens? I'm not drawn to him. They have to fix him up.
Sami Zayn is a happy go-lucky man who dresses like an old man and sings "OLE" to himself. Oh he also happens to be one of the very best wrestlers in the world. As for what he does during the week I imagine he plays chess and has amazing matches every night.
"I'm not drawn to him. They have to fix him up". Why? He gets respectable receptions every week. Guy is as over as a midcarder should be, which is where he is right now. It's one thing to want to see change and make him interesting for you but it's not the onus on the WWE to change a thing about him if he keeps fans entertained, even if you're not one of them.
He's just a guy. Really, once two guys shed their entrance attire and set to grimacing and killing each other between the ropes, does anybody really give a flying fuck what their gimmick is? What's Owens' gimmick, for that matter? He's a brawler, Sami is some kind of wrestler. Don't know any more than that, don't really care, as long as they can work a decent match.
Happy go lucky "boring" dude. Zayn's in-ring work is top-notch, he can talk, he's very likeable, but I'd like WWE to do something about his presentation. I don't know what, but there's gotta be something to make him seem less cookie-cutter.
I kind of agree with the topic in a way. Sami just seems like a jealous ex-buddy of Owens and a little bit of a sore loser with how they are presenting him. The dynamic between them worked far better when Sami was the successful one and Owens the jealous heel. What they are doing certainly isn't bad per se as Sami is still getting a good reception but they could certainly tweak it just a little to help new fans appreciate him and his backstory with Owens more.
At first, Bryan didn't have any of those things save the aggression. Even then, it wasn't as nuanced in his work until he actually got over with the crowd and even then, that was after 3 years in the company.
So Zayn's got time to figure himself out, and hopefully now with the brand split he can be given a chance to do just that.
That's why Reigns and Rollins are pretty boring imo. They're just regular guys who come out and talk. A gimmick would do wonders for them and take them to the next level.
I keep seeing people say he's "over" but show me where Sami Zayn has brought in more viewers for a segment/match or is moving a significant amount of merch.

He gets a crowd reaction and those "ole" chants seem to be happening often. As for merch, I've seen a few Zayn shirts in the crowd. No one is bringing in "more" viewers these days except maybe the Rock.
He's a Canadian hipster. He plays acoustic guitar in an independent coffee shop, buys used vinyl from flea markets, vintage clothes from garage sales, and is part of a Disc Golf league.
The extent of his gimmick/character seems to be hipster doofus. But while he dresses like a hipster doofus he never shows any personality. Thats the only thing about KO vs Sami; it just highlights how lacking Sami is in that department.
I do wish he'd stop wearing the grandad jacket and hat to the ring, it doesn't exactly do him any favours. I was a huge fan of him up until he got injured, since he has come back it has been very meh in general. But OP not everyone needs a gimmick, it's not the 80s anymore.
He should job to KO zillion times and then send to Superstars for all I care.
