Becky Lynch spoke with the Press Enterprise promoting Tuesday’s SmackDown taping. Check out the highlights:
On living her childhood dream: “When you say that, it’s still like one day I’m going to sit down and it’s going to hit me. It’s still so unbelievable. I was just in Mexico and the Undertaker was there doing his entrance. And I was like ‘what is this? We have to follow the Undertaker!’ It’s unfathomable. (NXT Women’s champion) Bayley and I talk about this and think about what we’re doing and absolutely cry with gratitude. We’re the luckiest people in the world. It’s living out a childhood dream with your childhood heroes.”
On her January 18th RAW promo segment with Ric Flair: “It was surreal. I’m jaw jacking with Ric Flair! The entire time I’ve been here. Dusty Rhodes was my mentor and Triple H is your boss. It’s everything you’ve grown up watching and now you’re jaw jacking with Ric Flair. I can’t even explain it other than saying it’s surreal and amazing. I wish kid me was around, like I could bring little Becky around to show her all of this. I’d love to see how she’d react.”
On whether Divas will main event WrestleMania one day: “I think so. I don’t see a single reason why not. What Bayley and Sasha did, they weren’t the main event because of a movement or because it was cool. It was because they’re that good. No one else could follow them. That’s what we’re moving to. It’s pure equality as long as you’re that good and you’re that much of a draw, I think you have every right to be the main event. Look at Ronda Rousey and I guess now Holly Holm. It’s a new time and it’s great to be part of it.”
Ten years ago I would of said not a chance. But with Sasha, Bayley, Becky, Asuka, Charlotte, Nikki. etc. it's more than possible and I would happily watch.
I dont see it happening. Outside of Ronda Rousey and the womens soccer world cup did well, women in sports just aren't big draws. Most men look down on womens sports and most women dont care about womens sports. It'd take a huge cultural shift and things like the WNBA, etc. being taken seriously for women to ever Main Event Mania. They're still just the piss break at most PPV's.
I don't think we'll ever see this. Main event of a PPV, any PPV, maybe, but WrestleMania, no. Even Rousey vs. Holm would not have main evented the UFC event had some other big fight involving, for example, Jon Jones or Conor.
It's not happening anytime soon. The women's division doesn't draw as well as the men's. I think it happened in UFC because the thought of women fighting that way was very intriguing. The only way it could happen is if there's a "booking revolution."
Technicly she is right
I like how she is not all gun ho about it too, she specificly said that as long as youre good and a draw you can main event. which is the correct answer.
Will we ever witness a time where 2 women outdraw the men? if you asked me 2 years ago i would say never, but things change and sometimes faster then we can anticipate.
Looks too me that Becky has a good head on her shoulders about the business. i can definetly see her continue to work backstage as a trainer or road agent after her wrestling days are done.
Not in my lifetime unfortunately. The main roster still has a way to go before women can be given more credibility. They are improving but its a minor improvement.
As long there's no Bella involved I'm all for it.... Actually as long as it's singles match between 2 of the four women (Bayley, Charlotte, Sasha and Becky). Would like to have Asuka in there too but with her, the build up should be just as good as the match itself.
I could see the Women closing a B level PPV one day, but even that is a long way away. Watching any of Becky, Sasha, Bayley or Asuka in a 30 minute match with great build up would be awesome tho.
Main eventing a PPV sure, that will happen someday and not even that far in the future with Sasha, Bayley, Paige and Becky, but main eventing a WM? I do not see that happening.
It most certainly won't. But that said, with Sasha Banks and co on the scene they could easily main event any other PPV.
Hopefully the Divas match at Mania gets a good time slot this year. No silly tag matches or massive battle royals to get everyone on the card. Take 2 or 3 of your top 4 divas and put them in a match for the title. Make it mean something.
As a feminist (yes I am one) I would love to see women main eventing Wrestlemania. But I know that is still a fair way off. They need to have women taken seriously on weekly TV first and then regular PPVs before even considering Mania. I think the talent is there and they are taken more seriously (yes, even Nikki and Brie. Come at me smarks) than they were even 2 years ago. Tbh the best thing to happen to the women's division was fame-hungry models disinterested in wrestling like Kelly Kelly, Maxine and Maryse leaving.
We know WWE can do a good female feud (Charlotte and Becky recently, Sasha/Bayley, Brie/Stephanie) when they pull their fingers out. I would only want women in the main event if they were booked properly and not done just 'to shut people up'. At the crux, I just want the female wrestlers to be treated equally to the men more than anything.
Of course it's gonna happen. There will be one year where you don't have guys like Rock, Bryan, Rollins, Brock etc. around (with that type of draw-ability, in their prime) and probably have some really good female's around that can draw and boom, there's your WM main event. But they're obviously not gonna main event with Rock type caliber guys around.
Apart from the fact that Wrestling fans could hardly give a shit about a show which is 95% male oriented, let alone the 5% that divas get to showcase.
I wish we would move away from the absolute minor details of this & that, and start to fix the meat of the product. I know it's "easy" to showcase women as main event on NXT, but how about fixing the resentment of the 3hr product.
Nothing but a distraction.
