What and Yes are fine, but "This is Awesome" gets thrown around like candy on Halloween. Just shows how formulaic and repetitive WWE can be most times.
I love Austin, but the "What?" chant is the absolute GAYEST chant of all time. Not just in wrestling, but in any form of entertainment. Legitimately awful. And the people who chant it all of these years later at these live events are cornballs.
The Yes chant is great, expresses fans pleasure or an answer to a question, it's a chant that can't be used to interrupt promos, or used every sentence.
Whereas What?! is obnoxious, annoying and can be used nonstop, during every sentence, it ruins promos.
I actually like that one very much. It usually the most justified NXT chant that they have when they do it. It also, i think is unique as to what it's trying to convey.
Normally, chants are a representation of the feeling of the audience's reaction to what is happening. "This is wrestling" takes that a step further.
It means that what is happening is so what the WWE is meant to be, being not shitty stories and booking that is at least 80% of the product, that the chant isn't directed at the wrestlers. Nor to themselves. It's directed to the higher ups in the company that they want to see witnessing what the fans want. Wrestling. Good Wrestling with wrestlers they respect.
"What?" Is a promo killer, and at sometimes it's just pure disrespectful in events like HOF speeches. I loved the chant in 2001 and it was entertaining during then, especially because of Austin, but that was 14 years ago
"Yes" is stupid, however it's genuine and pops in when the audience is marking out, so I don't mind it and it's actually healthy for the product
"WE ARE AWESOME" is pretty overrated. That happened maybe twice and people were purposely being self-serving and obnoxious about it. But the complete genuineness and cringiness of "THIS IS WRESTLING" tops it for me. Nothing is worse.
I voted both equally, but in hindsight, I'd say perhaps YES is worse. With the What chants, at least the audience took a pause and just did it whenever there was a pause in the promo. With YES, the audience just chants it loudly and tends to drown out whatever else was going on, including promos AND matches. Never once has the audience started chanting What during a match not featuring Steve Austin , but people will derail matches as well as promos alike completely with YES chants, and it doesn't even matter if Daniel Bryan is present or not. Most of the time, they're deliberately doing it to shit on a match or promo not featuring Daniel Bryan, which, as called for as it may be, does kind of ruin some of the experience for other people. So to me, the YES chant is more grating and annoying due to the fact that there are more circumstances where it can be chanted, whereas What happens only during pauses in promos. That being said, What certainly doesn't get off the hook for being any less irritating.
Yes is more annoying cause that shit was like a decade ago. At least with YES, even though I think its insanely annoying, at least it gives audience a way of telling WWE yes or no to things they present but it is only used when asked questions or shown something we like, while WHAT? is just a troll chant solely used while people are talking.
Not sure why the Yes chant is even an option, it doesn't ruin promos or the show at all. It's actually a positive whereas the What chants are always a negative imo.
the what chant destroyed many promos, and irritated the shit out of some wrestlers. the yes chant doesnt irritate anyone, but i would say the yes chant is worse because its fucking corny. what the whole chant stood for was corny from the start. what at least stood for heel stone cold and therefore must be badass somehow. thats why i must choose the yes chant to be the worst on general principle
The WHAT chant is fun to troll people with in real life, especially if they're not wrestling fans and don't know of the actual origins of what you're aggravating them with.
