Or did WCW/WWE just rely on his size as a novelty?
I'm watching him back in WCW apart of the NWO, and he never really seemed "cool". The only time that he was remotely interesting was when he debuted apart of the Dungeon of Doom.
His WWE run hasn't done anything for me either.
So my main question is, was he actually ever entertaining to you?
He walked down to the ring smoking cigarettes. He blew smoke in Sting's face. Dude was a fuckin' badass. Also, he was doing missile dropkicks, standing dropkicks, kip ups and all kinds of shit somebody of his size has no business doing.
Paul Wight in his prime was one of the greatest giants in the history of the business, and he still moves very well for a 40 year old, 7 foot tall man.
His 2002-04 heel run was awesome. That was him in his prime IMO. He's great in the big fat piece of shit monster heel role. His feuds with Rey Mysterio, Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Eddie Guerrero, and John Cena were all entertaining. Brock gave him the best matches of his career as well.
I'd say around '06 or '07 was when he started losing his luster when they turned him into the giant joke that is a heel/face turn every 6-12 months. If they had consistently kept him heel most of his career with important things to do I think some people would view him a little more favorably.
Not really, he just has/well he HAD the 'bah gawd almighty look at the size of that man' factor going for him. And regardless of where he was in the pecking order, you could always buy in to the storyline where somebody who's used to dominating matches has to try and deal with a giant.
But now, he's just fat and his constant face/heel turns (Like I need to point this out, everybody moans about it) just mean he's worthless.
I'd have him as an enhancement talent for other big guys now, instead of what he does these days which is run through the mid-card then job to already established main eventers.
The funny thing is, people complain about his recent face/heel turns constantly happening.
Its happened from the very beginning of his WWE run :Rollins
He made his debut attacking Stone Cold in the cage as a heel member of the corporation, barely just over a month later he turns face by headbutting Vince at Wrestlemania :lol
He then is face for a few months and turns heel again for a feud with Kane and tagged with The Undertaker. He then turned face again in time for Survivor Series 99' to win the title. He then turned heel barely two months later to side with Shane McMahon for a feud with The Rock. After Mania 00' he turned face again to feud against Shane O'Mac and then turned heel AGAIN in the summer before getting injured. He then returned at Rumble 01' as a face.
That's been his biggest problem, constant alignment changes and that has prevented me from ever really taking him seriously story wise.
Think the middle of his WWE career was more stable in that respect but I wouldn't know, wasn't watching it then.
his best days are 15 years ago. He was cool in WCW, and an above average big man. He had a decent start to his WWE run, but he's really done nothing of any significance in the last 10 years.
note - I didn't watch WWE from 2004-2011, but like, from what i know - ecw run, tag team champ, etc, i didn't miss anything important big show wise
Big Show has had several good runs and when he managed to get in control of his weight, he was a pretty decent athlete. Although obviously at this stage, due to the longevity, over-exposure, flip-flopping from face to heel on an almost monthly basis and just a lack of creative direction for him, it's left him wallowing in the middle of the card with fans getting bored of his act. They need to be careful because the "please retire" chants could get nasty.
This ain't the same diaper wearing crybaby we've been subjected to for the last few years. People really don't appreciate just how athletic the dude was in his prime.
Look at the height on that first dropkick. That's amazing for anybody. For somebody of his size it's out of this world incredible.
I mean he had the size that impressed some people, but constantly switching from face to heel without any given time in sticking to one alignment or enough to further his story.
The only think Andre had on him was that he could draw. If Paul Wight had been around a decade earlier, he surely would have diluted some of that appeal.
It shocked me how good Big Show was on the mic. I mean, he carried the Mayweather feud. We're talking about the biggest draw in any field in recent history... and Big Show carried him. That's huge.
Its always been about his size pretty much. During his WCW stint especially he was athletic as fuck for someone so monstrously huge. Definitely a decent asset to have around but I wouldnt say he ever really stood out on any roster as super over or especially interesting
He's always been an extremely talented individual. He's huge, has personality, he's a good promo, and is/was surprisingly mobile for a big guy. He's so one dimensional though. There is zero depth to him...all he does is rely on the fact that he's a GIANT. It's so predictable and boring.
I think this sums it up. He is or was a good and entertaining wrestler, but there should be more to a wrestler's character than just living up to one's own name. Otherwise things go from "Well, it's a big show" to "I'm the Miz and I'm awesome". Then there's no actual character, just a wrestler making a simple declarative statement.
So I guess he's been interesting but usually not the most interesting person in the picture.
Wwe mishandled his career. He should have been a part time tv attraction destroying people with a solid, long title run then been 'permanently' damaged by a hero face with periodic runs of destruction. No matter how impressive someone is, if you see them 10 times a month on tv, it loses its uniqueness.
I think kane should have been handled the same way.
Dug him in his WCW run and his feud with Shane McMahon but that's it.
