So I decided to reply with this, figured I'd share it here, see what other people have to say about what I wrote.
It's an art form that you either get or don't. It is a parody of a sport, yet unlike sports the outcome isn't the most important. You don't watch it for statistics and you don't bet on it. Much like any other television program, you watch it for the story. There have been good storylines and there have been incredibly poor ones. The genre is as vast as different types of music. Watching a good match is much like a game of chess in that each character has it's trademark attacks, but unlike chess these attacks are countered in incredibly innovative ways. They can come out of no where, they can then be re-countered seamlessly transitioning into another impressive move. They may know the outcome but the audience doesn't, it's fun to predict where the story will go, it's fun to see if you can guess what is going to happen. All of your favorite tv shows have been carefully planned long before you saw it, so what makes it different if it's done live in front of you? Theres no special effects, just what they can do in front of you. I worked in Pro Wrestling for 4 years. In that time I had to perform a stunt catching someone who jumped off a 25 foot balcony. We had no mats, we were on a hard wood floor, and a mutual respect for one another and that person trusted me with his life. Then I couldn't rest because I had to stand right back up and catch the second person who jumped. I get that people aren't going to like wrestling, I get that. But what I don't get is people who go out there and say it's garbage, it's fake, it's this it's that... at the very least you are admitting to not 'getting it' I respect that you are taking an approach like that. I could really go on for hours about this, but I think I've elaborated enough.
I defenitly agree with you. There are some people who just don't get it. Due to mine and my dad's love for wrestling, my mum has tried to get into wrestling. She's watched stuff by herself, she's watched shows with us, she's gone to shows with us. She's tried WWE, NJPW, ROH and TNA. And while she could appreciate the athleticism, she couldn't get into it and she couldn't get why me or my dad like it. If I'm honest, I don't get why I like it. Maybe it's escapism, maybe it's the stories and characters, maybe it's the action or maybe it's something I've got to enjoy with my dad and uncle for the past 12 years of my life. All I know is is that I love wrestling and some people don't and that's cool. Some people just don't get it.
Why do you even take the time to respond to a WWE facebook page its full of that "still real to me dammit" marks and annoying Indians marks that only mark out for Cena "Cena is da bezt ever"
Wasn't on a facebook page. Was someone on my friends list. As for why take time on that, it's something I enjoy doing. Even if it's not going to directly change their mind, like many things the more you are exposed to an idea the more open you are going to be to it. An idea is like a seed that grows in your mind, but hey not all seeds will grow.
Well lets be honest, people saying that generally come off as assholes, trying to sound better than people who watch wrestling. I mean, it's a television show. 99% of television is fake. They're fucking morons.
People like different things. That people don't like wrestling doesn't mean that they don't "get" it. I'm not a fan of unicycling. I don't see the appeal in pedaling around and doing tricks on a unicycle. That doesn't mean I don't get it... I just don't like it.
The average person has no interest in breaking down matches like smarks do. They don't pull out their trusty stopwatches to track the time between bells. They don't jot down notes so they know how many different submission variations were used in a particular match. The average person sees wrestling as ******* trash television, which it probably is.
Well I often refer to it as a parody of a sport in that it imitates a structure similar to sports. I know parody is supposed to be comical, but I feel it fits. There are certainly aspects that are parody of sport, ie the ref didn't see it. People are always criticizing the referees in sports for not seeing the foul play. It follows a similar structure to a sport.
Who cares what they say all of my friends hate wrestling unless it's a hardcore match with blood and they try to give me shit about it and I just tell them to fuck off lol
I got no problem with people who don't enjoy wrestling. The only ones that are annoying are the people who seem to think they're the sole individual who is aware that wrestling is scripted and feel the need to let fans know.
I love wrestling but to be honest, do you really think that he will read that ? I'm a fan and I didn't wanted to read it ( but I did it and nice text ), if someone doesn't want to like it, he won't like it. Show them the best WWE match you can and they won't enjoy it, they will make fun of the faces ( even if it's not a Ambrose's match^^ ), keep saying that it doesn't really hurt and will be like " when does that end ? ". I know it because I have friends who don't enjoy it.
There is no need to be upset about that, no need to force them to like it. The best thing to do is respect the fact that they don't see anything special in it and of course, they should also respect the fact that you enjoy it and never insults because you enjoy it ( but they can make fun of it, making fun of wrestling can be fun )
You did a commendable job of defending wrestling , OP. If people dont get wrestling, that's on them. It doesnt make them superior to you;you are just interested in a different form of entertainment than they are.
I am fully aware that they most likely won't read it, or won't reply because they have nothing to say. But I find it incredibly rewarding when I get through to someone. When it comes down to it, If it's someone I can't have an open discussion with, then I don't want them on my friends list. I've had large debates with friends on facebook, where we completely disagreed on the topic. Yet they remained civil and all I ask is they show me a mutual respect. I'll listen to them if they listen to me.
The biggest pet peeve I have is when people think I think it's real. They always go, you know it's fake right? I smile, then ask what their favorite TV show is, then tell them, you know it's fake, right?
The only thing worse than people blindly bashing things are people who think they responded so intelligently that they have to post it everywhere and show everyone so they can get their "attaboy"
Just let Catrina takes care of those who still don't get it.
