5 Questions:

- Do you typically agree with Meltzer's match ratings?

- Do you value those ratings as objective?

- Do you consider them significant to current wrestling industry?

- Do you believe Dave Meltzer, someone who never stepped foot inside a ring, is qualified to rate on every wrestler and their work?

- Do you believe he should stop rating matches for good?

Personally, I don't mind these ratings but I also almost never agree with them either. For instance, I don't believe Cena vs Punk MITB deserved 5 stars. What about you?

Not at all, really. And I'm not a hater of Dave's, I actually like him and consider him the most reliable journalist in the history of pro wrestling, but I don't let other people dictate what is and isn't a great match for me, and I've never really gone out of my way to check out what his star ratings for matches were anyway.

I don't take any notice, why would I? I don't need someone else's validation to tell me how good a match was. I either enjoy it or I don't, some matches are greater than others but star systems are silly in my opinion. Much rather compare two matches and debate on which ones better but giving it a star rating out of five when there's been thousands of matches is ridiculous, the same as rating a girl out of ten is ridiculous.

They can be interesting if you take them with a grain of salt. Sometimes I agree with them sometimes I don't. I read them for their entertainment value.

I must value similar things in a match, because my opinions tend to be close to Meltzer's. This isn't always the case, but it is more often than not. The main use I have for his ratings is for shows I've missed. Obviously, these things are subjective, but if Meltzer gave a match high marks, I'm more likely to take the time to watch it.

5 Questions:

- Do you typically agree with Meltzer's match ratings?

Often I do, but not always. He's rarely overtly controversial though. He'll never rate a match 5 stars that I think is 1, or vice versa. He might say 4 stars if i'm at 3 though.

- Do you value those ratings as objective?

Uh, sure? I guess he's objective, and doesn't have any ulterior motives if that's what you're asking?

- Do you consider them significant to current wrestling industry?

In what sense? He's a long-time wrestling reporter, who reviews matches. I always get a kick out of hearing what other people think of matches, so sure I enjoy reading them. It doesnt mean his opinion is the end all be all in any way.

- Do you believe Dave Meltzer, someone who never stepped foot inside a ring, is qualified to rate on every wrestler and their work?

Of course. don't you do the same? Most fans have rankings for wrestling matches. And for all kinds of other competitions. Don't fans vote for American Idols winners without being singers themselves?

- Do you believe he should stop rating matches for good?

Why? He's a reporter, one of the thing he does is report and review events.

I'm really confused by these questions. What's the point?

Couldn't give two fucks about them, I reckon 99% are in the same boat. A few very sad, lonely and very boring people value them highly and get vocal about them, while a few more sad, lonely, very boring people get angry about them and argue against them so they get far more attention than they deserve.

When I first became a part of the IWC and started reading the sheets, I took them as the gospel. But over time I started disagreeing with his ratings and then suddenly realized that his ratings are no different than mine. Nowadays, I really don't care about his ratings at all. In fact, I can't tell you the last time I've gone out of my way to hear about Metlzer's opinions on matches. If I want to get some feedback on a show, I actually using the ratings thread here.

As for your questions:

-At first I thought his ratings were pretty much on point. But within recent times, heck no. He has gone pretty spot crazy lately and would seem to rate anything four stars once the guys in the match almost die. Also, he overrates the shit out of puro (which has always been the case with him tbh). I don't think he's ever rated those shitty NJPW 6 man tags less than ***1/2.

-No, they are not objective? It's just one guy's opinion. Only difference between Meltzer and some random dude on the internet is that some random dude on the internet does not a newsletter.

-Not sure what you mean by the third question.

-I've never directed a movie yet I criticize movies. I never made an album but I have my opinions on music. Likewise, Metlzer has never wrestled but he can still have his opinions. The old farts of the 80s may talk shit about Meltzer never stepping in the ring so he has no right to call any match bad. Yeah, okay, thank God the 80s are over and wrestlers don't expect us to passively watch their dull matches and when we criticize it, we're out of place cause we're just fans. I wonder who puts money in their pockets? Anyway, Meltzer has every right just like we do to complain about a match sucking.

-No he should not stop rating matches because his ratings are still a source for feedback.

I had Cena/Punk at ***** when I first saw it. I've yet to re-watch it for a reason. I know it will go down. So, I'm just keeping the amazing memories of that night alive in my mind.

I'm the guy who sparked a 20-odd page thread about his Reigns match ratings, and even I don't think anyone should use them as actual evidence of quality.

It's his opinion. Everyone has one. He's been doing it for so long that there's definitely some weight to it, but you still don't have to agree. The best thing to do is go into every match with an open mind, even if you've already seen Meltzer's ratings.

I enjoy his great historical knowledge of wrestling and how he applies that to his enjoyment of matches. I don't agree with every opinion, but why would I? Opinions differ. The important part is he always does have a proper reason for liking for disliking a match, not just throwing out an opinion for no reason. However, there is no need to endlessly deliberate on his specific star ratings, as the man himself will tell you they're a minor part he only includes in his overview of matches in the newsletter, they are a tiny part of what he does and fans pay far more attention to them than he does.

His biggest contribution besides insider knowledge is his encyclopedic knowledge of wrestling history, that's the part that ought to get most discussion, not his passing opinions of matches being squabbled over pointlessly.

I agree 80% of his rating, or have similar rating with him. but I kind of think he used different standard from different era. for example Lesnar vs Reigns had same rating as Rock vs Austin WM17.

- Do you typically agree with Meltzer's match ratings?
like I said above.

- Do you value those ratings as objective?
Kind of.

- Do you consider them significant to current wrestling industry?
significant enough. especially after several years after the match took place.

- Do you believe Dave Meltzer, someone who never stepped foot inside a ring, is qualified to rate on every wrestler and their work?
LOL then IWC should never exist because 99.99% don't either.

- Do you believe he should stop rating matches for good?
No. because some match I never watch. those rating could be part of my consideration.

Different strokes for different folks. I live by that saying, so if he hates a match I like, or I hate a match he likes, I don't care. I agree with him sometimes, and disagree other times. The world would be dull if everyone agreed on everything.

I tend to disagree with the ratings almost always. They don't bother me though, I just pay them no mind. I would not read them before I watched the event though, but I don't read any spoilers if I can.

Seems like he gets fast news though and he seems to be trusted with ppv numbers, so I don't dislike him, just indifferent.

I have a passing interest in them. I have different criteria than him I guess. To me a great match has to have great action and crowd participation. If the crowd isn't feeling the match means it's not connecting and it's just guys doing moves. The biggest thing for me are botches, when I see one it kills the match dead in my book. The recent nxt women's title match, which everyone salivate over even to the lunacy of calling it one of the top matches of the year is less than 2 stars for me simply because of the clunkiness going on.

Different strokes for different folks.
