In an interview with the PodNasty Wrestling Podcast, Owens said beating Cena at Elimination Chamber gives him a "pretty good shot" at appearing in Money in the Bank.
I think he's right. In fact, if he beats Cena, the MITB Ladder Match would lose credibility for not having him in, just as I think the US Title loses credibility because he doesn't want a title shot against Cena.
Owens could compete in MITB without winning and easily be protected. And if he wins, he could simply carry the briefcase around in NXT. MITB is for stars who aren't quite ready to be world champion anyway. Having MITB would be great exposure for NXT, forcing casual fans of WWE to take the promotion seriously and, you guessed it, subscribe to the WWE Network. Interview below:
About like the chances of anyone developing a fully automatic colony system for before I hit the post button.. Oh well since you're reading this, I already did, oops no chance for either.
I like the idea of the briefcase appearing on NXT or more specifically, a secondary briefcase for the USC or IC. The idea that a guy is practically guaranteed to win the WHC inside of a year of debuting is wrong though and should spark smark outrage about rocket pushes.
If he won MITB and stayed on NXT would make the surprise cash-in exactly that mind, and I still reckon he'll get DQ'd and end up powerbombing Cena onto the apron, like.
That's how i'd book it, you have him make a statement, and not risk sparking complaints about a rocket push. It makes him look strong without having to actually beat Cena.
Seriously though, slow the fuck down. This is Cena, it's not happening, nor should it. Owens still has a lot to accomplish down in NXT before he starts making minute waves on the main roster. The best outcome we're gonna get here is for Owens to get DQ'd because he's just beating the absolute shit out of Cena.
They just need to have no expiration date on the MITB case. Or make it an any title briefcase. Yes, it would be dumb to waste a briefcase opting for a title outside the WWEWHC, but WWE has done worse (Cena getting his Rumble shot at No Way Out, the past two Royal Rumble winners, Miz's title reign).
How about a NXT only MitB match? Creates crossover exposure, let's you know a talent is getting called up soon and that they're in for a big push without it being overkill and gives them an instant, logical feud with whoever is the champ at the time. And if you make it for either secondary title then it creates an air of suspension as to who they'd target and you'd really have to pay attention to midcard matches never knowing if a guy is going to surprise debut and cash in.
I can't see how Owens will benefit from losing to Cena, unless he's going to join The Authority in the end.
He's the NXT champion. Let's say Cena wins: Does Owens return to NXT licking his wounds and being constantly reminded by his opponents that he couldn't beat Cena so he's not ready for the main roster? Does he fall off the map like Neville and end up doing a program with Wyatt for RAW?
It wouldn't make sense to me. The build up for Owens, not only accepting the challenge, but doing this at EC is a "Kevin Owens has arrived!" moment. This match is is mainly NXT vs RAW or Main Roster, however you want to explain it. If the NXT champ loses to the US champ, and not just any bland US champ, we're talking about Cena, who represents all that is wrong or right with the WWE (according to who you ask), what does that say about the NXT brand? WWE has been hyping NXT for months now, no way are they gonna let it falter by letting their big bad wolf/champion lose out to Cena. Cena has nothing to lose by losing to an NXT guy. He has a rematch clause, using that will benefit Owens even more in terms of exposure and being built into a star with the assistance of Cena.
I know Cena wins nearly every match, but I don't see that happening this Sunday. I think Owens will win. Don't know if it will be clean or not, but I have a feeling they're trying to make him a bit like Lesnar than Rollins. He'll be a monster heel. Cena also seems to be on board with helping NXT talent make it on the main roster.
This is how I said in another thread the match should end and it would benefit Owens and Cena.
Near the end of the Cena vs Owens match just as Owens hits his finisher on Cena, have the lights go out and then cue up Balors entrance.
He can come out in his demon paint, and walk to the ring after his full entrance have the lights come up and Owens looking at him super pissed off, have Cena from behind get a cheap roll up pin, to beat Owens, then let Owens and Balor brawl outside the ring until the refs break it up.
This would be a great way to make Owens look strong against Cena, keep the belt on Cena and make the feed between Balor and Owens heat up.
Plus it would be the perfect way to introduce Balor to the WWE audience who have not seen him NXT . This would also promo the title match between Owens and Balor and also give Owens a reason to face Cena again once he gets his main call up.
I'm reminded of Sandow's promo where he said that beating Cena is going to be his goal in life or something like that - and everyone here ate it up like a mega Sandow push was coming or something ... and then, it turned out to be his last promo in the WWE till after his Miz feud was over.
Anyways, not saying that that's what's going to happen to Owens, but seriously with the way the WWE treats Cena's opponents, anything can set them off the wrong way. Sure Owens has a lot of confidence and he's really working it .. but this is Cena and Vince's track record of burying his opponents is even more legendary than Cena's career.
He will win by countout i bet. Knowing WWE with how hard they protect Cena for no reason, they'll probably have a child calling for help in the audience and heroic John Cena will run out to save him, thus making him lose via count out.
Would Owens even cash in, i mean he is the NXT champ after all. Seriously that shit was so dumb. What is the kayfabe reason for guys not wanting as much gold as possible? Why wasn't Reigns the IC champ going into Mania, why did Kofi wave away Woods mentioning he deserves a WHC shot, why hasn't Bray tried to get any title, why hasn't any current champ or member of the tag team division answered Cenas open challenge, how are we supposed to buy that the titles are important when the wrestlers don't seem to give a shit about them?
I swear WWE does the opposite of what everyone wants, so that when they do minor things right, we feel so proud for them.
Like we expect crap on top of crap for so long, that were so use to crap. All we taste is crap. That little taste of NXT/Coolness in WWE, is like Red Lobster rolls.
Your post is so true it's not even funny. I'll just leave it at that.
Re: MITB/Steen. At first I thought it would be too much too son, but from the aspect of looking at the other options, he would be second to Ambrose. Ambrose is the most over face on the roster by far, have him give Seth a hard fought match at EC and then win MITB. If not, I can't think of anyone more exciting to win it other than Owens. Just from the sheer unpredictability of what they would do with him after he wins the briefcase would be worth the win for Owens.
Soooooo Cena goes over the undefeated rusev and now look at poor rusev injured from fighting rybork. And now it's owens turn ? Why is Cena facing these up and coming stars to just defeat them? Does this make sense?
There won't be a finish to the match, especially since Owens and Cena can do more with each other and build a long program. Also too Owens is still the NXT champion, and he's feuding with Samoa Joe and Sammie Zan. Let him finish his NXT program before have Owens would something big with Cena. Some of you act like beating John Cena is some huge accomplishment. A good chunk of the roster has already beaten him. It's not like beating Taker at Wrestlemania or beating Hulk Hogan in his prime here.
