Possibly. I got the impression that WWE gave Punk that promo as sort of a last ditch bargaining tool? If that was indeed the case then it would have happened still obviously. If they gave him that promo because they had absolutely no one remotely credible to challenge for the title on RAW, then probably not. Orton/Cena would have been the main summer feud and Punk has no reason to cut the promo.
Yes, because when that happened the "Brand Split" was still (sort-of) active and Edge was on Smackdown so his still being there wouldn't have effected it at all as Summer Of Punk was a mostly Raw Storyline.
The summer of punk happened because Punk basically forced Vince to push him, leaving the company after his contract expires, Vince has no option to give Punk the spotlight because he couldn't have lost another name like Punk.
Basically, the summer of Punk could have happened no matter what.
CM Punk still would have gotten his big push. Edge would have had no affect on that but Orton most definitely would have been. They were planting the seeds of Christian turning on Edge and feuding over the World Heavyweight title but that never came about for obvious reasons. I wonder if Orton still would have ended up getting drafted on Smackdown if Edge hadn't retired.
I didn't watched WWE shows from Dec/Jan 2010 to last October because of my cable provider crappy dumping of channels, so I don't know how was the summer of punk.
Just wanted to say that CM Punk always seemed to me a pretencious and hipster version of Edge.:grin2:
