The vibe seems to have fully changed since Edge left.
Imagine all those potential feuds. Randy Orton wouldn't have been face of Smackdown. Edge could've feuded with Shield, Authority, Rebel Punk, Daniel Bryan, all these NXT stars, the list goes on. He doesn't seem to fit the current batch of wrestlers though.
Edge has claimed that he was preparing to retire after a match with Christian at WM 28.
So, all I could guess would've happened is finishing the feud with Del Rio, having one more run with Christian for the tag titles and the final match with Christian.
I really don't see what's different. There's a handful of decent feuds, but there aren't any monumental changes to the wrestling landscape. The standard of Edge's work had been on a continual decline since his return at Royal Rumble 2010.
I only picked up watching again about a year before Edge retired and absolutely hated him. He was bad in the ring, had cheesy unintelligent jokes that were forced on us.
Granted, I missed ALL of his run at the top and the entire Ruthless Aggression era and everything but none the less, if Edge never retired he'd still be the same boring and uninspired guy he was right before he left. I mean that feud with Kane was straight up embarrassing.
if benoit never died...

if shawn didnt break his back...
