Re: Dave Meltzer On Potential Wrestlemania 32 Match
The mixed tag idea would at least have the added attraction of Rousey which would make it more fun.
I do not under any circumstances want to see HHH Vs. Rock one on one. I was literally 11, almost 12, years old the first time I saw those two Wrestle each other. By the time I reached high school, I saw them wrestle in almost every conceivable scenario.
I enjoyed the matches. Some of them were great! But I also loved Flair/Steamboat back in the 80s. If you asked me in 2000 if I wanted to see Steamboat/Flair again, I would have been like "Uh, no". Sting Vs. Vader. I LOVED those matches from 92-94. Would I have wanted to see them in 2002 or beyond? No.
It isn't even because they are old either (Okay, that is A reason, not THE reason). It just isn't a fresh idea and it is another example of relying on the past to generate interest rather than moving forward.
You only have Rock for limited appearances (this will be his first match in 3 years). And your first idea is to throw him up against his old rival from almost two decades ago? I mean I could understand if this was an Indy show or a Legends-fest and you want to spike ticket sales, but this is the number one wrestling company in the world and their big solution to generate interest on the grandest stage is to do the match they should have done at Wrestlemania 2000? 16 years too late? Seriously, you don't want to put Rock up against somebody he's never faced before? Somebody you can make a star out of? Hell, WHAT ABOUT ROMAN REIGNS?!?!? You want to make him into something, well dude! Put him up against Rock! I'd take it. At least there is a family connection there to play with, Roman needs more of a platform to grow and you KNOW Rock is going to take care of him.
If you are going to use these part timers, why not use them in ways that I've never seen before! The match was awful and Taker looked broken down and should never wrestle again, but Bray Vs. Taker was AT LEAST a fresh match. Hell, Sting can do just about anything they want to do with him because it is just about all fresh because he's never been there before. If it came out next week that they will have Sting go up against the nWo next year, I'll groan.
I've already experienced Rock/HHH. And the worst part? That Network they keep selling us on, you know, for 9.99. It has every Rock/HHH PPV match EVER on there. Go watch those instead if you want to relive the past! In the here and now, I'd want to see new things. What's the next big match? What's the next big character to get over?
If I want to relive the past, I have VHS tapes, DVDs, and the Network for that. But to have me invested going forward? Sorry, but I'm WAY more interested in Brock Vs. Rollins (see, THAT's a fresh match!) than I am an attempt to relive the Attitude Era.
I am not against using older guys and part timers (if they can still go) but is it asking too much to have them used in a way that I've never seen before or has never happened before?
