That is just my opinion you are welcome to disagree. Please don't flame me I'm going to try and explain why I feel this way. I have my reasons.
All his promos are the same. Here is the basic rundown of a Rock promo. He comes out... stares at the crowd. Then he stands silent for about 5 minutes (building anticipation I guess). "Finally the Rock has come back to (insert city here). Stands silent again for another 5 minutes. Rock then proceeds to share a comedic story about himself in that said city. Then he sucks up to the fans and praises the sports team of whatever city he is in. The Rock smiles. Then Rock wraps up the promo with childish joke and "If you smell what the Rock is cooking blah blah blah."
Same promo different city. I don't buy into that stuff personally. Sounds like a bunch of kiss ass bullshit but whatever. Again this is just my opinion. I like The Rock outside of WWE he is one cool ass dude. He is great on the mic when he is being serious. I can't stand him when he just spews out the same shit.
I was never really into him personally. His way over the top approach just felt unnatural and entirely forced. I much prefer the approach of talking to the crown rather than talking at the crowd, there is a difference.
Yes I agree. The Rock is good when he's being serious and not saying the same shit. When he is actually talking to the crowd and not just sucking up and shoving his 1000 catchphrases down our throats.
He isn't my cup of tea, like I prefer the methodical style of a guy like Jake Roberts - but Rock is one of the best speakers in wrestling period. The guy just oozes charisma, and this is coming from a guy who isn't a fan of his in the slightest.
He could make the crowd go ape shit by reciting Cat in the Hat, Rock's the man.
He did and he got handled by Cena on occasions too, but let's all just pretend he didn't because he's The Rock and "cookie puss", "moscow moose knuckle" and "monkey piss" and "fruity pebble" are hilarious funny we can't just stop howling with laughter..
Maybe I'm just tired of hearing the catchphrases. He has way too many catchphrases he repeats way too often. It gets old to me and forced. I actually think he is great on the mic. I've never been a fan of guys who suck up to crowds. Especially when guys lie and praise shitty sports teams and claim to be fans of the team just to get cheers.
So that is something that only he does yeah? Like when Chris Jericho calls the citys sports team to get boo's while in a comercial, so when it's back on TV he already has his heat?
That wasn't my only point. Read the entire post. I don't have problem with catchphrases but Rock has like 10 different catchphrases and repeats them way too often. It feels less like him talking to the crowd and more like him talking at the crowd. You can basically take one of his promos and just replace some words in them with different cities and repeat them everywhere he goes. No one will tell the difference.
The Rock can be untouchable on the mic, but sure, he has had his fair share of redundant / stale promos.
Jericho's debut annoys the fuck out of me now. He cuts a good promo and Rock says very little outside of the 3 or 4 catchphrases to make Jericho look like a dumbass.
I think by the time 2000 hit and he was really in his groove, his promos had more diversity and were solid. He also moved away from that deeper, sometimes monotone voice which made the promos ever better!
CM Punk had like one or two catchphrases yet he is considered one of the best mic workers of all time. He talked to the crowd not at them. He didn't saturate his promos with catchphrases and kiss ass bullshit. He just spoke his mind and was directly to the point. God I miss Punk...
This "All he does is this _________" argument needs to stop. I mean you can literally take any wrestler and simplify them this way and make them seem like they were talentless bums.
It's like if I were to say "All Mizdow does is act like the Miz so therefore he's overrated."
This is something I've said on this forum a few times, The Rock uses the same promo over and over. Don't misunderstand me, I do consider the Rock one of the best on the mic, if not THE best, he can do a brilliant promo if he wanted to but he resorts to the same promo each time, just changing it slightly for the city he's in.
I'm not flaming at all, but it sounds like OP has only watched Rock promos post-2011. Sure, they're not the same as when he was in his prime but I still think he stands head and shoulders above everyone else.
The name of the game is to bring people in with your promos. Get the crowd involved, get them invested, make them interested. The Rock can do it in his sleep at this point, its ridiculous.
I respect everyone's opinion, but I have to disagree that he's overrated. If you can get a crowd going apeshit by saying very little, then you're special. Look at Rock's last RAW appearance in Brooklyn. He spent about 10 mins describing how he flew from Miami to Brooklyn, and the crowd was with him every step of the way so by the time he got to the "FINALLY..." part everyone was going nuts for it.
You can't be overrated if what you're doing produces results. If everyone on here was talking about how amazing someone was on the mic but the promos constantly fell flat for the live audience, then I'd argue that the guy was overrated because there's no evidence to back up what is being said. The Rock can speak absolute nonsense but he does so with such charisma and delivery that 99.9% of the time it works flawlessly and the crowds prove it.
It's not just the smark crowds either. Every crowd Rocky performs in front of generally loves his schtick. I love CM Punk, but there's an argument that his promos for the most part (not all of them) only seemed to go over well in smarkier cities. The general casual crowds never responded as strongly to his "breaking the 4th wall" type promos. Again, that's not true all the time but in general. Whereas Rock could say anything and get it over, others struggle.
There's a reason Rock has soooooo many catchphrases, and its because the fans got behind everything he said and so he kept them. Why stop saying stuff that always works? Rock would be stupid to come out and not say his stuff because he'd be throwing away guaranteed crowd reaction.
Again, all due respect to the OP. I like talking about people's promo preferences
OP, this could be a generation thing... I don't know your age and what year you started watching but if you've only experienced his part time work over the past few years I can understand where your coming from.
With recent rock promos and appearances, it's very formulaic and more like a mix tape of Rocky's greatest hits. I mean how many times was WWE going to run Rock Concert into the ground...same old shit.
But if you lived through his promo work of say 98-2003, there was no guy arguably more exciting, entertaining, or creative on the mic than The Rock.
His promo material might have been childish but it worked during the Attitude Era. Everyone was immature back then. The Rock's electrifying charisma had the whole arena chanting his name after every sentence. It was a good thing that he had many catchphrases because the fans would finish them for him. It got the fans more involved in his promos.
Sure, these promos didn't exactly translate well in the current era. But the Rock can still insult you like no other. And he still has people listening unlike 95% of the current roster.
Omg lol at this thread. Smh. Kids these days. I have seen most the greats in their primes and the rock maybe the best mic worker of all time. There is nothing overrated bout him. He is sarcastic and funny as hell. His promo' on cena alone makes him greatest ever to me. But I can youtube his stuff from 98-2002 and still be highly entertained. Others such as hogan, Jake roberts, flair, savage, austin all were great too but in a more straight forward way. I put dusty Rhodes on the list also. For my money the rock is the best out of all of them cause his promo's can be played over and over again and I'll still laugh like it's new
omg lol he doesn't like the rock. What an idiot lol. Everyone who doesn't love the rock is stupid lol lol lol. The Rock is the best mic worker of all time lol. how dare he have an opinion different then everyone else lol such an idiot lol lol lol lol

Why do people get mad when people disagree? We all have opinions, and its better if they differ because then we can discuss. Nothing to get angry and abusive about!
I can watch promo after promo by The Rock and laugh every time. They never get old for me. His Rock Concerts crack me up. The more ridiculous he acts, the harder I laugh.
Can't have legit conversations or debates anymore because if you dare say something like The Rock is overrated then you are an idiot and the scum of the Earth. Even if you make valid logical points as to why you feel that way. They don't try to argue or refute your points they just call you stupid or something.
I think if we took Rock in a vacuum from 2011+ then you'd be correct but since everybody knows him as "The Great One" that people connect that to his stuff now because life isn't a vacuum.
Hey op just realize that you are bordering on insanity by making such crazy statements bout the rock. Heck even my grandmother use to like the rock back then and she didn't watch wrestling. But hey I guess some people feel that Michael Jordan was an overrated nba player. so hey there is nothing I can add to these types of statements
It's not what you say it's how you say it. It's all about the delivery and the Rock was the best at it. It's the delivery that makes someone a great talker. And having the right voice also helps to make it easier. For instance someone like Swagger will never be great on the mic because he just doesn't have the voice for it.
100% agree. Half the time I don't even care what Rock is saying, its the way he talks that draws me in. William Regal said it best on the "Top 50 Superstars of all time" DVD when he said that Rock could stand in the ring and read from the phone book and it would still be highly entertaining. Delivery is key.
If you're electrifying the millions year on year and come back ten years later and still be the biggest attraction in wrestling while not being the best in the ring I'd say that makes your mic skills objectively great.
That is just my opinion you are welcome to disagree. Please don't flame me I'm going to try and explain why I feel this way. I have my reasons.
All his promos are the same. Here is the basic rundown of a Cena promo. He comes out... salutes at the crowd. Then he stands smiling for about 5 minutes (building reactions I guess). "Raucous crowd here tonight in (insert city here). Stands smirking again for another 5 minutes. Cena then proceeds to share a comedic story about his opponent's manhood with baseballs in hand. Then he sucks up to cancer patients and praises the sports team of whatever city he is in. Cena grunts. Then Cena wraps up the promo with something nonsensical and "I'll never give up blah blah blah."
Same promo different city. I don't buy into that stuff personally. Sounds like a bunch of kiss ass bullshit but whatever. Again this is just my opinion. I don't like Cena outside of WWE he is one pathetic dude. He is tolerable on the mic when he cares about what he's doing. I can't stand him when he just spews out the same shit.
I don't agree, but I see where you're coming from as I think the same about Daniel Bryan, since he's disbanded from Team Hell No and soared to main even status, his promos have basically been the same every week.
