[Report] WWE wants superstar to break CM Punk’s Record as WWE Champion

Former WWE wrestler CM Punk holds the record of the longest reigning WWE champion of the modern era, as he held the WWE championship from November 20, 2011 to January 27, 2013 for a total of 434 days. CM Punk’s nearly 15-month title reign is the sixth longest WWE title reign of all-time, behind Pedro Morales [1,027 days], Bruno Sammartino [1,237 days], Hulk Hogan [1,474 days], Bob Backlund [2,135 days] and Bruno Sammartino again [2,803 days].

With CM Punk exiting the company in an ugly way, WWE doesn’t want to make reference to him as the longest reigning WWE champion of the modern era. As a matter of fact, they don’t even want to reference CM Punk at all, hence why they’re removing all CM Punk signs from their live events, and asking fans who wear CM Punk-related merchandise to their events to either change, or leave.

The belief is that Roman Reigns will walk out of WrestleMania 31 as the new WWE champion, defeating Brock Lesnar. It’s also no secret that WWE wants to make Roman Reigns the next John Cena. Well, the longest reigning WWE champion of the modern era before CM Punk was, in fact, John Cena. After Cena won the WWE championship for the third time in his career, he held the title for 385 days before an injury forced him to relinquish the title. However, at that time, WWE had no plans to have John Cena drop the title any time soon.

Like CM Punk, Brock Lesnar walked out of WWE before his contract had expired back in 2004. Lesnar had just signed a big money extension with WWE, but then decided that he no longer wanted to be a professional wrestler soon thereafter. Just two years earlier, Lesnar had become the youngest WWE champion in history, winning the title when he was just 25 years old. Four months after Lesnar departed from WWE in 2004, WWE wanted to erase Lesnar’s record as the youngest champion in history, so they had Randy Orton win the world heavyweight championship when he was just 24. Now, the two titles Orton and Lesnar won were different, but WWE did portray Orton as the youngest champion ever in the history of the company, replacing Lesnar.

With WWE wanting to make Roman Reigns their next big star, and, for the time being, wanting to erase all of CM Punk’s records, Reigns could be the man to break CM Punk’s record as the longest reigning WWE champion of the modern era, whether fans like it or not, which could be a mistake on WWE’s part, but time will tell.

All I can so is if this happens, WWE will sink into new lows.

And have fans turn on him as a result? Don't see your logic.

Ehhh wasn't he going to drop it to Orton like 6 days later?

It might work if they turned him heel and gave him Heyman as a mouthpiece.
But they won't do this, they'll keep him face and make him Cena MK 2.
So here we go again, another Superman top babyface who gets booed out of the building and draws a good chunk of fans away.
And what would this mean for Rollins? Has he just been forgotten about now?

Even though the source isn't reputable, the rumor itself is plausible.

Just think about it... Reigns beats the guy who beat the streak. Look at the rest of the roster. You think Roman is going to lose that title in six months?

If people don't like this news, they should stop watching after the post-Mania Raw, because this is going to be a lengthy run.

This is worrisome. I like Reigns, but guys, even if you're his biggest fan, this is setting him up to fail. You HAVE to see this. He isn't ready. He can't even carry a 10-15 minute match on his own, and he can't even cut a 2 minute promo without stumbling and forgetting lines. You don't groom guys while being the champ, you don't use the title as a means to raise a superstar. You groom them so that they're actually ready to carry the damned company alongside raising that belt.

Good lord, talk about great expectations. You've almost got to feel sorry for the guy. Take a man who currently amounts to one of the shallowest main-eventers of the 21st Century, already in danger of being exposed. Then force him into a position he's woefully unprepared for, before he's shown any real signs of possessing the talents required to excel. A position that dictates the talent must open the show with 20 minute promos and close the show with 20 minute matches every week. Then pencil it into the books that this will be the score for the next 2 years straight.... Sink or swim, Roman.

WWE are looking for the next Cena, and if they put the title on Reigns for 16+ months, that's exactly what he'll become - for all the wrong reasons. Even if the guy makes great strides, he's not going to overcome that kind of ham-fisted Superman booking. A sizeable portion of the audience will be turned off before Roman has even had the chance to grow into the talent he has the potential to become.

"He's always the Champion"
"He only has 5 moves"
"He's Stale"
"We want somebody new"
"Kids and women like him, but most of the men don't"
"He can't wrestle"
"He goes over everybody"
"He wins every feud"
"He buries rising superstars"
"We are sick of seeing him"
"He's been Champion too long"
"His promos are awful"

Who am I talking about, John Cena or Roman Reigns? If WWE force feeds the fans Reigns it will only strengthen the resentment towards him. People, get used to Roman Reigns. Get real used to him. Because unless he tanks bad, he is going to be the next Top Dog in WWE. Once Cena leaves, somebody needs to carry the torch. And despite all of Reign's inadequacies he is getting that ball. (Is it a torch or a ball? And where are all these brass rings people want to grab?) For better or worse, Roman Reigns is the guy in WWE's mind.

He's like the modern Lex Luger, being groomed for a push when he's nowhere near ready. Luger was a bust, Reigns if they go through with this will drive many people away.

It's already a bad decision if they put him in the main event at WrestleMania this year (although I must admit that if it were a triple threat, they could possibly get away with it). But to have him hold the title for longer than a year? Just. No. If he had promo skills, if he had some wrestling skills where he could do 10-20min matches with ease, if he was as over as Punk was, if they had 2 world titles instead of one, then maaaaaaaaybe they could get away with it. But as of right now, you can't even check off one of those 4 boxes.

That's giving Reigns too much credit. Luger was never fully given the ball in WCW where Sting became the main guy and by the time he was in the WWF, he was already a seasoned vet that was capable of doing 10-15min matches and delivering average/solid promos without stumbling over lines repeatedly.

Put it this way. If he had Luger's overall skillset, I'd be TOTALLY fine with Reigns getting the strap at Mania.
