I don't think it's really about Cena perse, but more the way he's portrayed and booked. What's the point in getting behind Reigns when it looks like it's gonna be the exact same thing? And what's worse is, they're cutting huge corners with Reigns. At least Cena earned his spot by getting organically over by proving he can be entertaining, edgy and cut a good promo. In the end, his character went in a different direction and became stale etc etc... Reigns isn't doing any of this, he's going straight into SuperCena mode without the groundwork before it. He can't put on as good a match as Cena, and Cena isn't exactly brilliant either. He doesn't even have an ounce of Cena's promo ability either.
I agree with the fact that the only way Cena will get displaced is by people getting behind someone else (preferably one of Vince's favorites) but I do think people have the right to like who they want. With 10 years of SuperCena booking, I find it perfectly justfiable that some fans are hesitant towards Reigns being the top guy.
The way I look at it is that Cena has stigmitized the business of Pro-Wrestling. WWE is now seen as a childish, immature circus and that's mostly due to the fact that the face of the company is a 37 year old man who dresses as a boyscout and cut chilidish based promos. When your main guy is targetted at the kids, it affects the perception of the whole product. With Reigns as the top guy, I feel some of the stigma will go away. Reigns is cool, acts badass and has this intensity and 'manliness' that Cena's character just doesn't possess. I honestly believe with Reigns on top, it will repair some of the damage that Cena (and Vince's out of touch booking) has caused.
As someone who's hated Cena's guts for the past decade, i can safely say i'd still rather have him than Da Look. Cena may be an arrogant overpushed burying piece of crap, but at least he can occasionally have a decent match, and can work for more than 5 minutes without getting blown up.
It isn't that Cena the performer is bad. It's the fact that his character has completely stigmitized the entire business. His character alone has made Pro-Wrestling socially unacceptable and that's something that no Wrestling should want. Reigns needs improvement but him being the top guy, IMO, will is alot better than Cena continuing to hurt the business.
Sorry but I like wrestling characters for what they offer ,in and out of the ring, not because they are supposed to replace cena (which won't happen anyway at least by reigns ) .
As much as I despise Cena's guts the guy can actually cut a passable promo every once and a while and wrestle a decent match with the right opponent, Reigns so far has not been able to do any of that; and I'd honestly rather have the evil that I know then the evil I don't unless Reigns does show me the improvements I want out of him and think he can make.
Reigns isn't even ready yet, that's the problem. I like him but he will only end up being hated like Cena. IIRC, Cena wasn't pushed this quickly back before he was a main eventer.
I did a poll not so long ago, and people actually wanted Cena over Reigns!!! Shows how many idiots there are around here. Than don't bitch about Cena still overcoming the odds and being champ.
