John Cena, the man who single handedly devalued the product so much that long time fans (such as myself) completely stopped watching for long periods at a time.
Yep, almost everyone in the wrestling industry is on John Cena's side. Its WWE's job to create and promote popular wrestlers, and Cena has been the most popular wrestler in the world for the last ten yrs. Don't bitch at Cena for not being as good as Steve Austin or The Rock, blame everyone else for not even being at Cena's level.
But yeah, the first match made me sit up and take notice of this young kid, then the story that he was a die hard wrestling fan started to get pushed and I liked him more.
Then, somewhere along the line, he went from being this bionic guy who just loved to fight into a "gangsta rapper", it was an unusual gimmick as Eminem's fame was starting to wane, I just never fully understood it. What he did was not original, clever or eye catching, in fact, his rapping and "Thugonomic" moniker were all laughable, I still remember that skit with Stephanie where he tried to rap for her backstage and she just buried him. It was cringe worthy.
But through all this he had some exceptional matched with Holly and then....they turned him into the Lesnar beater?? That was the wtf moment!! That was the WWE jumping the shark. Just after Lesnar had beaten guys like Angle and the Big Show and become a PPV attraction, who was being billed as some rap joke gets to beat him? Even imitating his finisher? LOL
But hey, somehow all that crap gelled with the kids and look where he is now, the biggest name in the business.
In the year 2044, we'll see the following on WWE.com:
"42 years ago, the 77-time WWE champion John Cena made his epic debut on a show called 'WWE Smackdown!' which was later renamed the popular 'WWE Cena!'"
His new name should be John Cenanuff (pronounced seen enough).
