Punk was the champ, but wasn't at the focus like the champ should be. That reign should've turned Punk into a megastar, but it was hampered by questionable booking/creative decisions.

They caught lightning in a bottle with Punk, but WWE in recent years has always tended to be late to the dance.

Mayorga on facing Vargas: I'm going to give Vargas the chance to cash his last paycheck. I would like to say publicly that Fatty Vargas has always feared me. I conceded to take this fight at 162 pounds because fatty couldn't lose any more weight. I will do Vargas a favor by retiring him in this fight so his family doesn't have to suffer every time he steps in the ring. I'm going to do his wife a favor and not let her cry anymore.

This is true.

Personally, I liked the reign, more over because I am a big fan of heel Punk, and highly enjoyed his promos during the reign, as well as some of his matches.

Well, to be fair, the prestige of the title has been in the toilet for a while now, even before Punk.

Didn't enjoy it IMO. Sure, it's up there with one of the greatest reigns in terms of ring work but pro-wrestling is more than that. The feuds sucked for the most part. Y2J feud should have been great but they made it way too complex by adding the whole family insults and Chris questionning the straight edge lifestyle. How did a feud that was originally about two people trying to prove who is truly the best in the world turn into family issues and pouring alcohol weekly on the opponent? The Ryback feud was good but looking back at it, it was a last minute decision that felt rushed and pointless which was the start of burying Ryback's character. They forced themselves into a corner of either ending Ryback's unbeaten run or Punk's title reign. They made Maddox a dodgy special guest referee but nothing came out of it except for the fact he just got fired, returned as a jobber and now runs RAW (sort of).

People think that long reigns automatically mean restoring prestige but when you have Big Show, John Laurinitis and Kane closing PPV main events over your WWE champion then there is a problem. Not to mention AJ was once more important than the belt itself during the Bryan feud. To be fair, he did restore some credibility during his heel run when he was talking about the history of the belt and comparing his era to Hogan's era so that was great, I guess.

I agree with most of this. I enjoyed Punk's reign, solely due to to his heel run. His face run was completely unimpressive, and I was somewhat in favor of Jericho beating Punk at WM 28, even though the intention was to put Punk over, because Jericho's work was far more enjoyable in their feud.

During the heel portion of his reign, there was some really sloppy booking taking place. The period with Ryback and Cena challenging Punk seemed really lazily put together with no real structure. The segments on Raw were all over the place, and there was no real flow of storyline.

However, I still enjoyed some of his in-ring work, like Punk VS Cena at NOC. The key part about the reign that I enjoyed were the heel promos he and Heyman were delivering on a weekly basis. They may have gotten a bit repetitive, but on the most part, I was very entertained by them.

His run as a face was forgettable but once he turned heel his reign picked up greatly. Not everyone has to like Punk though, i would think more people like him than hate him though because guy is very talented. Of course you'll get a bunch of people more vocal you hate whatever he does

Oh yeah, I wasn't saying it was bad, BTW. I was just answering the title of the OP.

Really the only thing memorable about it was the length of it and his feud with the Rock, everything else was just filler.

first time in this thread a guy who is not a fan of Punk recognize that and made great points. I agree with almost everything you said, the feuds didn't suck tho but it's just not that memorable except for Rocks feud. His feud with Jericho and Ryback were good and liked Punk/Bryan just because of the great matches they had together. There was several great segments and moments which was very entertaining to me.

Default Re: Why do people crap on CM Punk's title reign?

Because:

- It was nothing more than the world's longest transitional reign
- It didn't put anyone over
- The storylines were uninspired, and the matches were nothing special
- It exhibited just how one-dimensional and charmless CM Punk is (not to mention boring), and that he obviously did not possess the innate presence or charisma to carry the company
- It was dominated by a mediocre midcard champion, who made the strap feel like a midcard belt.
