Seeing him become creepily demanding when they're alone at his place gives us the first glimpse of a troubled and scarred individual and everything after is just the culmination of his troubled self breaking down. The shot of him alone at his house, almost lifeless and cut off from reality is especially poignant as you truly believe by that point that Morrell could be like that everyday before he leaves the house. Isolated, scared and confused before becoming a new act when he ventures outside and alters his supposed outlook and behaviour.
Damn, this film does sound very intriguing. I'm not put off by gritty and powerful scenes and I trust your judgement that there's a deeper purpose and meaning behind the violence and that the true merit of the film lies in the character development of the father as opposed to the violence he unleashes.

I think the movie was initially split with critics, much in the same way Funny Games was. Though 7 days is clearly not a movie to entertain you, it's very challenging to the viewer, and this point is only fortified by it's lack of score. There's absolutely no music in the movie. Often times, it feels almost like a bleek and Nihilistic 'claustrophobic' movie much akin to the movie 'Closetland' where most of the action takes place in one room, and centers around the strength of it's main character and the moral dilemma he's faced with. I know I was emotionally drained watching it, and I could really sympathise with what the father was going through which is most important. Have you seen Law Abiding Citizen? If so, take the first half hour of that movie, and what Gerald Butler does in the name of justice. That should give you a good idea of what you're in for with 7 days, even though both movies are very distinctive in their own right.
Anyway, Very cool to find a fellow fan of DMS on here. I tried getting my girlfriend into the movie, but she was turned off by the thick accents and the slow pacing. Obviously Shane Meadows movies aren;t for everyone, but they're hidden gems in my opinion if you go into it with an open mind.

Re: Tell The Truth
Really looking forward to this now based on your analysis and thoughts. Seems like a film I'll be able to find attachment in through strong characterisation and forcing you as the viewer to empathise and try to rationalise the concept of revenge and justice in the name of moral decency. I haven't see Law Abiding Citizen truthfully. Interested anyway just based on your observations.
Yeah I adore Meadows and his approach to filmwork. Love how most of his actors are local and people he's worked with before and he genuinly seems committed to using people he believes in through their talent rather than trying to find a name people will immediately recognise. Seems like so many of those he works with go on to bigger and better things. His films definitely struggle to appeal to a worldwide audience with so much British references, culture and humour to be found in his films, but you're proof the message and direction is strong enough to appeal to those outside the British circle.
Really want to try and watch Twenty Four Seven, Once Upon a Time in The Midlands & Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee soon. He's also working on a Stone Roses biopic which will be released in the spring/summer which I'm psyched for. Big fan of The Stone Roses as a group and seeing Meadows tackle a project about them intrigues me greatly. Makes me want to watch 24 Hour Party People. A film/biopic tackling the Madchester music scene from the 80s. Ian Curtis of Joy Division and his outlook on life drew wide praise for how it was presented and the actor who played him.

Shane meadows discussion? The man is awesome. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend le donkey and scor zay zee. It's a mockumentary about a roadie and his rapper protégé. It's a comedy with considine and is legit laugh out loud, but it ends up being a really moving film. Meadows plays himself filming the whole thing.

. I mentioned in my post above it was on my list of Meadows to track down. Great to hear its worth the anticipation.
You seen 24 Hour Party People Bubz? Very much in the same vein as Le Donk and Scor-zay-zee judging by your overview. Steve Coogan apparently has a great performance channeling some Alan Partridge into his performance. The take on Ian Curtis of Joy Division in particular really interests me.
Also, serious discussion in TTT. McQueen was right, the apocalypse is nigh!

Re: Tell The Truth
Really? I loved the Stone Roses back in the day, so that should kick some serious ass . Not sure if i've seen 24 Hour Party People, but I have seen "Control" which is a movie about Ian Curtis. I liked it.
Meadows has grown on me a lot, but then again, i've always been one for good british entertainment. It's too bad that were faced with such a strong cultural barrier, I think some of the best stuff has come from Europe, especially in comedies. Shows like 'Spaced' and '15 Storeys High' probably would've been huge crossover hits in the Western world if they weren't so overlooked, but i'm going off on a tangent, and that's a whole other topic for another time lol
Law Abiding Citizen is ok. I think it had an interesting concept, they built up the suspense nicely but imo it fell flat on it's face in the 3rd act when they took things waaaaaaaay over the top. LAC is very much a movie meant to entertain with sensitive themes, and 7 days takes those themes and challenges you to experience them in a visceral way with the rose-coloured glasses off.

 @ a fellow Roses fan.
Yeah I really need to check out 'Spaced'. Baffles me why I haven't after hearing numerous instances of praise for it.
Interesting thoughts on LAC. Love the final sentence, perfect description of the sort of film that appeals to me currently .

Re: Tell The Truth
Oh man 24 hour party people is so great.
The problem I have with Control is the same with most music biopics like the Johnny Cash or Ray Charles ones, its when the original available footage of the artists is so legendary and iconic that not even the greatest actors can recreate its impact.
24hPP gets around this by being so utterly hilarious and Coogan putting a fair bit of Partridge into his performance, my only problem is the guy playing Shaun Ryder, just doesnt seem to get it right at all.
Speaking of music biopics, this summer they were filming scenes for the Jimi Hendrix movie right near my house, featuring Andre 3000 as Jimi, saw him filiming and he really looks the part but Ive heard theyve not got clearence from the estate to use any Hendrix music in the movie!! lol, I imagine if they dont get it theyll just have some fiddly wah wah blues licks for a soundtrack.

Also at one point I will get the buzz to hit up Scotland, namely Glasgow. Won't make plans with Craig, it has to be spontaneous and by chance. If its meant to be, then it'll happen.

Anybody ever played Subbuteo at five in the morning with an ex-convict? What an experience that was, I'll tell you.

I haven't done that actually, have played one of thos pub quiz machines with two ex-lifers in an East End pub, fucking terrifying, NO I DON'T FUCKING KNOW MARTIN JOHNSON'S DATE OF BIRTH FUCK YOU FUCKING PUB LANDLORD.
They robbed a bank together in the late 70s, guy that owns the pub was with them, they're decent folk in that "Aye, you're family's from around here, that's fucking good because if you came in here with that fucking strange Central Scotland/Glaswegian accent and didnae huv roots in Dennistoun going back at least 100 years you'd be getting fucking glassed and you wouldnae be seen again" sort of way.
I had HERBAL SENSATION DRAGON SOOP whilst watching Labryinth at a friend's flat on Saturday.... that was an experience.

Re: Tell The Truth
It shall happen. May I be turned into a pile of dead skin by Malcolm Tucker if it does not.
That does sound rather terrifying. Always hate those 'local' pubs where only a handful drink so right out the bat you're recognised as a new face and then if you don't have a convincing accent you might be up shit creek. There's one rough as a dog's arse pub in my ex uni that was 100% locals. Went in once for a swift pint whilst waiting for others, despite being Welsh I have a Northern/Chester accent due to being predominantly english speaking most of my life and was getting eyed up by people nearest the bar when I ordered. Never had the temptation to go back since, everyone of them looked like their ancestors had breeded with everyone from Stoke.
P.S good to see 24 Hour Party People getting more love. Might give it a watch tonight if I don't get caught up randomly completing The Scooby Doo Show.
