re: WF Baseball Keeper League - Draft = Wed, Mar 6 @ 10pm CT. Lock keepers ASAP.
So. Can rehash next year's stats since a few of us are building.
Here is my proposed 8x8. Simple, but expanded.
Hitting: Runs, Home Runs, RBI, Stolen Bases, Average, On-Base Percentage, Slugging, and Strikeouts
- OBP - This stat is a must, imo. It's what separates Joey Votto from the rest of the league. His .OBP is like .470. It's what makes Carlos Santana so valuable even with a shitty batting average. His OBP is typically a .100 points higher. It's what makes Adam Dunn even more useful. There are guys who don't hit for average, but still walk a ton and find themselves onbase.
- SLG - I'd prefer separation versus OPS. OPS combines the two, but there are guys who get onbase but don't mash the ball. Allowing SLG to be it's own helps give value to different guys. Conversely, there are guys who are mashers, but don't walk much. Like Mark Trumbo, and EDWIN.
- Strikeouts - This is a balance out stat. Without it, guys like Dunn, Granderson, Joey Bautista would be ridiculous in our league. Even with their poor averages, they're killers in Runs, HR, RBI, OBP, and SLG. Granderson even steals bases. Additionally, this provides values to guys who are contact hitters, but not power hitters. Like Starlin Castro, or Joey Altuve. Altuve doesn't hit for power, but he doesn't really strikeout often neither. It makes players like him more useful.
other possible stat: Runs Created, Stolen Bases Net
Considering we have 10 positional hitters, adding these three stats would be tremendous, imo.
Pitching: Strikeouts, Wins, Saves, Earned Run Average, Walks/Hits Per Inning, Quality Starts, Walks, Saves
- Quality Starts - If a pitcher pitches a mininum of six innings, with 3 ER or fewer, he gets a QS. I like this stat a lot. And I think it's a must add. Simply because, it's pitcher dependent. Not team dependent like wins. Wins are a team stat. QS are not. They give value to the good pitchers on shitty-ass teams. Like Matt Garza, JA Happ, or Aaron Harang. Happ is an okay pitcher stuck in a bad place. Harang is the same way. Doesn't get you wins, walks a lot, but however, he gets Ks and pitches a lot of Quality Starts.
Walks - This is a simple balance stat. If you wanted to, you could load up on pitchers, and use all your bench on starters. You could do that so that you could win Ks, Wins, Quality Starts, and possibly WHIP. The only negative to loading a big pitching staff is ERA. However, now, if you do, you probably lose walks as well.
Saves - Punting saves is lame. It's kinda against the point. Yeah, I know, no one likes chasing closers but it's apart of fantasy baseball. Well now, if you decide to punt saves, you lose two stats. Simple as that.
other possible stats: complete games, holds, blown saves
8x8. You guys have probably been playing 5x5 for all of your fantasy baseball "career". I've been doing the expanded stats for three years now, and I positively say, it's better. Much better.
Do it for a year. IF the league doesn't like it, we'll switch it back. What's the harm in trying it out?
Also. I know we already had a draft with the 5x5 stats in mind...but that's not a real concern. There are 22 positions on the roster. You only get to keep five. You can definitely fill out the team properly with the other 17 spots. Also, those five keepers you are keeping are either Elite players, All-stars, borderline All-Stars, or future All-Stars. It's not like they're going to hurt you in the new 8x8.
I rest my case. Discuss.
