I do enjoy the "those cats are pointless" with no explanation though. That setup consistently provides the most balanced results and equally values both Guards and Big Men.

How many FG's your team is getting is going to be reflected in your point total as far as I'm concerned.

If you want a modest number of categories then that's perfectly fine with me. I'd prefer it be a standard setup though without silly stuff like +/-. What do you have in mind?
