bubs' season 5 speech makes the entire show worth watching.

Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

What Victarion said about it not holding your hand at the beginning...

This was great. It just dropped you into the middle of the shit and you were on your own. It made everything seem more real, like all these characters really did exist before you got a look into their lives. This crazy Baltimore existed before you began watching. I liken it to the adjustment you have to make when entering a big city for the first time. You gotta get your bearings and your feet under you since things are so different than what you're used to. The city is moving on with or without you. Catch up, keep up, because no one else cares.

Oh yeah have we mentioned how great the theme song is yet? If so, agreed. If not, how great was this theme song?

Theme song ruled, all versions of it, but you don't fuck with Waits.

Wink Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

My favoRite version of the theme was season three... Aaron Neville I believe... Bitches, season three was my favorite season as a whole as well.

To me it just felt like everything that had been built up in season one and two, paid off in that season.

And season four was a reboot almost with the focus on the stanfield crew, the lack of focus on mcnulty, the focus on the kids in the school, ect.

That was something tha bothered me about five, you had built up these great characters in four... These group of kids and aside from Michael and dookie, they other kids all they got was a one episode cameo.

Now maybe that had to do with five only being ten episodes but still...

I don't even care about Nammond. Fuck him, kid was a bitch but randy... His last name was wag staff, cheese's last name was wag staff.. Cheese was obviously Randy's illegitimate father... That would have been some kind of nice follow up.

Speaking of elements that went nowhere... How about Rawls in the gay club... I was sure the payoff to that was mcnulty finding out and using it against him but we got nothing.

Great show but even the greatest shows have flaws.

never read the AV club Wire reviews but last time I rewatched Sopranos Id read them after each episodes, reviews were ok but found the most insightful stuff to be in the comment section. I'll check out The Wire ones next time I watch it.

lol thats the original version of the song, Waits wrote it, my fave version is actually the first season (Blind Boys of Alabama), my least favorite is Steve Earle's for s5, however Earle gets a pass for being great playing Walon, I especially like when he turns up to the hospital to visit Bubbles and he's got a big Steve Earle patch on the back of his jacket

I like that they threw that out there and then just left it alone even thought it seemed a bit weird, was worried they'd go full Vito from Sopranos style subplot ("I love you johnnycakes").

Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

Yeah, the AVClub's comment guys provide some really smart insights about both Wire and Sopranos (and many other shows, I believe). There's no "JANICE SUCKS LOLZ" types of comments, just a bunch of people discussing character arcs, stories, callbacks, double meanings and stuff.

Loooved Vito's story.

Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

johnnycakes. Yeah, season 6 part 1 of Sopranos is the shows lowest point for me but it certainly wasn't bad and my only complaint is them stretching out the Vito storyline for too long.

Earle's version is my least favourite but he's a boss so he gets a pass from me too. First season song was so boss.
